Proposal: Change the deadline for choosing to change from Traditional Grading or Pass/Not Pass Grading to Audit status from 16th --30th and 31st -- the last day of instruction before scheduled final examinations to the 15th class day.
Justification: The associate and assistant deans have made this proposal because an increasing number of students have been changing to audit at the end of the semester to avoid a bad grade. This is not the intended use of audit. Many students select audit by mistake when another grades such as N or I would be more appropriate. Some students jeopardize their financial aid because audit credits do not count toward credit loads. It makes advising more difficult as the audit may mask real performance issues that should be addressed.
The following numbers of “Audit” grades recorded at the end of recent autumn semesters demonstrate this increase:
1995 111
1996 144
1997 158
1998 200
1999 not available
2000 285
2001 388
2002 461
