New Business- Subcommittee consent agendas

Education and Fine Arts Subcommittee
The Education and Fine Arts Subcommittee Chair Potts explained each of the proposals.  Items listed below were postponed for follow-up.  The other items on the summary were approved for inclusion on the consent agenda to be presented to the Faculty Senate.

DRAM UG 411
Physical Performance Skills III

renumber to DRAM 412

Can not re-use course number unless it has been inactive for 10 years. Department will need to re-think the request and work with the Associate Registrar to find an appropriate number.

DRAM UG 412
 Physical Performance Skills IV

renumber to DRAM 413

DRAM UG 414
Acting V

reduce credits from 5 to 3, make repeatable to 6

There is concern about the increase in required credits from 76 to 83.  The Regents define an extended major as having up to 80 credits.  ASCRC would like a complete explanation of why the additional credits are necessary.  The catalog language should be parallel in each of the options.  A semester-by-semester menu was suggested for clarity.  The drama ed option still refers to a minor in the catalog language.  A proposal is also submitted to delete the minor.

DRAM UG 415
Acting VI

make repeatable to 6

MUS 219

Piano Proficiency Assessment

New course

There was concern regarding the use of 0 credit courses. Although the requirement and time commitment currently exists, there should be a better way of tracking that does not involve a 0 credit course.
The department chair will be invited to discuss the issue with ASCRC when time allows in November. The committee would like to investigate how other Music programs administer the requirement.

MUS 220
Upper Division Required Performance

New course

MUS 388
Concert Attendance

New course

Program Modification Adding 0cr courses to curriculum requirements for a BA, BM, & BME.

Turn the requirements into courses.  This modification was suggested by the NCATE team during our program review as an improved assessment tool.  In addition, it will help faculty advisors and the UM graduation office better track the degree progress of each individual music major

Social Science Subcommittee
The Social Science Subcommittee Chair Szalta-Petree explained several proposals.  The general education social science designation was not approved for COUN 485 by the subcommittee.  It felt the course was too specific, required a prerequisite and would not be appropriate for general education at the upper-division level. Approval of the items was delayed due to the time.

The committee was adjourned at 4:00 PM.
