Communication:

Chair Luckowski informed the committee that ECOS wishes senators to have a full week to review consent items.  Therefore, any items approved today will go on the December consent agenda.

Chair Luckowski requested subcommittee chairs with items on the Senate’s consent agenda to attend the meeting to answer any questions.

New Business- Subcommittee consent agendas

The continuation of the Social Science subcommittee was postponed.

Business and Journalism Subcommittee
The Business and Journalism Subcommittee Chair Henderson explained each of the proposals.  Items listed below were postponed for follow-up.  The other items on the summary were approved for inclusion on the consent agenda to be presented to the Faculty Senate in December.

Program modification:
New Catalog Language for all AAS degrees

The committee suggests that the capstone experience be separated someway so as not to confuse students in departments where the experience has not yet been defined.  The language does state that students “must fulfill.”  The committee approved the item with the understanding that the revision would forth coming.

BUS 105 T

Deciding Majors & Careers

Course not approved.  The concern is that the course does not have academic rigor.  That’s not to say students wouldn’t benefit from the career guidance, but this should be something students are seeking on their own and should not receive academic credit for the course.

RTV U 489,

Preparing for an Internship

Course not approved.  Students should be doing this on their own and does not warrant academic credit.  There was also concern about separating the credits from the summer internship.

Old Business:

Humanities and Cultural Studies –curriculum follow-up
Appropriate justifications were received for general education designations for DRAMA/ART 336H, ENCR 312A, and RUSS 307L.  The increase in credits in the Classics Latin option brings the option in alignment with the other options and is well within the 60 credit limit.  MCLG 155 will not be listed with Liberal Studies.  (Items approved)

There is still concern regarding PHIL 330 because the instructor is an adjunct and it is questionable whether a permanent course should be created for a temporary faculty member.  Would this not create some type of permanence and create ramifications with the contract?  Associate Provost Walker-Andrews will ask Associate Provost Staub about the ramifications of this in terms of contract language and Professor McCormick will check with the UFA President.

Forestry and Biomedical Sciences-curriculum follow-up
Forestry resolved the situation related to numerous sections of FOR 311 and a revised form was received.  Consent of instructor will need to be added to the course description. (Item approved.)

The issue with the Nursing program modification has not yet be solved.  Chemistry is willing to teach a one credit lab, but this will need to be funded. The College of Technology is currently negotiating with the Provost.

Ethics-curriculum follow-up
An acceptable justification was received for EVST 495,
How We Experience Nature:

Environmental Aesthetics and Case Studies from the U.S. and Japan.  There has been a request to allow an exception for PHIL 495, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly to be allowed as a special topics course for one more year because materials have all ready been printed advertising the course in various summer programs.  (Items approved.)
Again, there may be an issue in establishing a permanent course because the instructor is an adjunct.  The courses were approved.

Committee Reports:

General Education Committee
Professor Eglin reported that the General Education Committee would like information to go to the Faculty Senate in December .  Given this timeline, when would ASCRC like the information?  The General Education Committee’s intent is to circulate the models and structure to a wider audience for dialogue.  ASCRC would like to have the information as soon as possible, even if it is still in draft form prior to the Thanksgiving break.

Next week the committee will hear from the Social Science Subcommittee, follow-up from Education and Fine Arts, and Sciences, and will need to review the writing courses.

The committee was adjourned at 4:00 PM.
