Curriculum Review Follow-up

·         The Communicative Sciences and Disorders Courses were reviewed by the Education and Fine Arts Subcommittee with the assistance from Diana Lurie.  She made some suggestions and the department responded adequately.  The proposals were approved.

·         MED 280E was approved. It was previously granted a one-time only designation.

ENEX Catalog Language

·         Although the full Writing Committee did respond to the revised language it needs to go to the Faculty Senate next week because information about the new requirement is included in orientation materials being distributed.  ASCRC approved sending the seconded motion on to ECOS and the Faculty Senate.

NC Grading Option

·         The committee inquired whether ENEX 200 should be allowed to use the NC grading option considering the course is designed for more advanced writers and also fulfills the writing course requirement.  The Composition Program will be asked to provide a justification for use of the option.   The course descriptions for ENEX 101 and 200 may be confusing to students.  Students do not have the option to choose NC grading; it is the professor’s choice.  The NC grading language should be removed from the description.  Composition will be contacted about this as well.

Repeat Fee – grade recalculation

·         ASCRC should complete a report that looks at all the interconnected issues.  The fee as a disincentive to not taking courses seriously the first time should be considered separate from the grade recalculation policy.  The committee could consider changing the drop/ add policy.  Other related issues include credit/no credit grading, the early warning system, and advising.   The College of Arts and Sciences is considering conducting a student survey.  This information could be included in the report.

Director Hoell went over some of the reasons students retake courses.  She requested members send any additional reasons to be included in the list.  The revised list will be sent out for further consideration.

Upper-division Workgroup Update

·         ASCRC should provide the President with the data and make a recommendation.  There are concerns that adding additional upper-division credits to the requirement may extend the time to degree for some students, particularly transfer students and students that change majors.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
