PROPOSED RESOLUTION FOR CONSIDERATION BY ECOS AND THE UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA FACULTY SENATE

WHEREAS, the Bush Administration has not provided the American public ample evidence that Iraq is a viable threat to the United States;

 

WHEREAS, the Bush Administration has not provided the American public with ample evidence that Iraq has stockpiled weapons of mass destruction;

 

WHEREAS, the Bush Administration has not provided the American public ample evidence that Iraqi objectives are linked to Al Qaeda or the  War on Terrorism;

 

WHEREAS, there is little support for a regime change in Iraq outside the United States and Britain;

 

WHEREAS, the United Nations and U.N. Security Council remain divided on the Bush Administration’s posture against Iraq;

 

WHEREAS, the American public has been denied a full, frank and free debate about the cost of  military action in Iraq or how it will be funded;

 

WHEREAS, an unprovoked and unilateral attack on Iraq appears to be lacking moral merit;

 

WHEREAS, a military strike against Iraq would result in considerable loss of life and resources to both the United States and Iraq;

 

WHEREAS, a military strike against Iraq would create another round of Gulf War Syndrome for our young men and women;

 

WHEREAS, a war of the type and magnitude proposed against Iraq will inexplicably overflow and impact American social institutions, particularly education;

 

BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate of the University of Montana- Missoula, is opposed to a pre-emptive military attack against Iraq unless all avenues of peaceful resolution are pursued and exhausted and the Bush Administration receives full endorsement of the United States Congress and the United Nations.
