Topics Addressed ¯

Recent years have demonstrated a strong commitment on the part of the UM students, staff, faculty, and administration to creating a sustainable campus environment. This UM commitment to sustainability was highlighted in 2002 by President George Dennison’s signing of the Talloires Declaration. President Dennison appointed a Sustainable Campus Committee (SCC) to guide and document UM's efforts in meeting the goals of the Talloires Declaration.

UM paper procurement and possibility of recycled paper use campus-wide; possibility of sustainability office or coordinator position on campus and nationwide caparison of such positions on other campuses; USGBC and LEED Certification procedures and possibilities for the implementation at UM.

Unresolved Issues ¯

  • SCC will be working over the summer and next fall to expand the dialogue and build cross-campus support for the hiring of a Sustainability Coordinator. We will be forming a Working Group with representatives from numerous campus departments/offices to discuss this issue.
  • The committee will also discuss how to move forward on current recommendations with the President’s guidance and how to widen campus dialog and gain consensus for and/or modifications of SCC recommendations.
