Code of Ethics of

The University of Montana

Ethical behavior requires all members of the campus community to discharge their obligations to others in a fair and honest manner and respect the rights and dignity of all.  Whether employed by or enrolled in the University, everyone associated with this campus has responsibility for themselves and for the University as an ethical institution.  The fundamental relationships among students, staff, faculty, and administrators in a University setting especially merit our respect and care.

To promote an ethical institution and encourage ethical citizens, all members of the campus community will:

  • Respect the commitments of the Mission Statement.
  • Identify and disclose all potential conflicts of interest and take appropriate action to prevent any compromise of individual or institutional integrity.
  • Treat everyone with respect and dignity, even when the values, beliefs, behaviors, or backgrounds of a person or group offend us.
  • Speak out against hatred and bigotry whenever we observe their occurrence.
  • Respect each other’s autonomy and dignity.
  • Perform all academic, creative, and scientific endeavors with honesty and accountability.
  • Communicate professional and organizational messages in a truthful and respectful manner.
  • Use University resources appropriately and challenge those who do not.
  • Determine when legal behavior differs from ethical behavior and respect legal requirements even when attending to ethical considerations.

Because of the special ties that link us together, we have a social obligation to each other and a fiduciary duty to the public.  By respecting the rights and dignity of others, and by striving for fairness and honesty in our dealing, we maintain an ethical University.

Code of Ethics of

The University of Montana

Ethical behavior requires that we discharge our obligations to others in a fair and honest manner and respect the rights and dignity of others.  Faculty, staff, and students have the responsibility for themselves and for the University as an ethical institution.  In this regard, we consider the fundamental relationships in a university, especially those involving students with faculty and staff as deserving of special care.

  • We respect the commitments of the Mission Statement.
  • We identify and disclose all potential conflicts of interest and take appropriate action to prevent any compromise of individual or institutional integrity.
  • We treat everyone with respect and dignity, even when the values, beliefs, behaviors, or backgrounds of a person or group offend us.
  • We have the responsibility to speak out against hatred and bigotry whenever we observe their occurrence.
  • We do not harass, mistreat, belittle, harm or take unfair advantage of anyone.
  • We do not tolerate plagiarism, lying, deliberate misrepresentation, theft, scientific fraud, cheating, invidious discrimination, or abuse of others.
  • We do not misappropriate the University’s resources or resources belonging to others, nor do we permit any misappropriation to go unchallenged.
  • We understand that legal behavior differs from ethical behavior and respect legal requirements even as we attend to ethical considerations.

Because of the special ties that link us together, we have a social obligation to each other and a fiduciary duty to the public.  By respecting the rights and dignity of others, and by striving for fairness and honesty in our dealing, we maintain an ethical University.
