Graduate Council Meeting Minutes

October 15, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 12:10 p.m.

The 10/8/08 minutes were approved.

Business Items:

Curriculum review -social science
The Social Science Subcommittee presented curriculum items for approval. Two items were withdrawn by departments. The Council discussed whether EVST 367 UG should remain a UG course. The department does not want to change the course to a 400 level. Follow-up is required on EVST 367 UG. The audience for the course should be clarified. The subcommittee has four items remaining to review. The items on the summary (appended below) were approved.

It was clarified that the changes in the semester a course is offered is considered editorial and do not need to be reviewed by Graduate Council.

The subcommittee recommended that the form be revised to include a space for the graduate increment in the course change section.
Curriculum review - professional schools
The items on the summary (appended below) not identified as pending were approved.

UG / Dual Listing Discussion
Registrar Micus or Associate Provost Brown did not find any policies or procedures prohibiting dual listing of courses. Chair Moisey has contacted the Deputing Commissioner of Higher Education, Silvia Moore. She is looking into the issue as well.

One approach would be to have a 1 credit 500 level course taken with a 400 level course. However, this would not be very effective in terms of the rule that 50% of graduate students course work be at the 500 level. Another approach is to have the 500 level course include ‘advance' in the title. The lecture would be taught at the same time as the 400 level course. This approach would require a departmental agreement regarding faculty load. A subcommittee was appointed to flush out a proposal. Members include:
