Ex-officio members Present: Associate Provost Brown
The meeting was called to order at 12:13 p.m.
The 9/17/08 minutes were approved.
Chair Moisey reviewed his drafts of the IIP recommendations. Earlier versions of the students' committee included 2 faculty members from doctoral programs. The current language was negotiated with Dean Strobel. The compromise involved the Graduate Dean serving on the committee and one faculty member from a doctoral program.
- The Mathematics admissions standard proposal was revised and approved.
- The Council discussed the recommendations from the Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies Workgroup with Associate Provost Brown. The current program lacks structure and needs to be reorganized.
Associate Provost Brown was supportive of a program director as a way for focused leadership and energy. The request for funding could be added to budget planning for the next biennium. If goal is for the program to grow then someone will need to be responsible. It might be possible for the Advisory Council to assume some of the responsibility similar to the IIP Oversight Committee.
It was agreed that an Advisory Council should be formed to review the current structure and make specific practical recommendations for improvements given current resource constraints. The MIS Advisory Council should include a couple members from Graduate Council and members from other programs that are representative of disciplines. Professors Hirstein and Stanley agreed to serve. Professor Ulrich Kamp was nominated as well. He served on the Workgroup and is very interested in strengthening the program. Department Chairs and or Graduate Program directors will be sent a request to solicit volunteers.
- The UG / dual listing issue will be discussed with Associate Provost Brown in two weeks.
