Preamble to UM’s General Education Requirements

The University of Montana seeks to provide a general education that develops competent and humane individuals who are informed, ethical, and engaged citizens of local and global communities.

Students are encouraged to cultivate civic awareness vital to a democratic society, to embrace interdisciplinary, multi-cultural,  and international perspectives, and to prepare for leadership roles in a chosen field and the greater community.  The general education program encourages students to assume primary responsibility for their own growth and education, to achieve a genuine confidence in their knowledge, and to acquire the skills and will to examine critically the human experience

As a member of the Montana University System, UM is charged with providing a general education program that “stimulates critical analysis, clear and effective communication, and the creative process.”  Students should become broadly educated by participating in the creative arts, developing an understanding of science and technology, appreciating the humanities, and learning the history of our culture and other cultures. They should become acquainted with issues facing contemporary society.  Upon completion of the general education requirements  students should be able to articulate ideas verbally and in writing, understand and critically evaluate tangible and abstract concepts, and employ mathematical and other related skills appropriate to a technologically advanced society.

The purpose of the General Education Requirements (GERs) is to provide a high quality intellectual foundation to all UM students regardless of their majors or areas of study. General education accommodates all students whether in the liberal arts or professional degree programs. The GER courses encourage students to appreciate a diverse world with many cultures and challenges, while instilling a desire for life-long learning.
