ANTH 353 UG

Archaeological Survey

Renumber to ANTH 466 UG, drop one of two prerequisites

The relevant material in ANTH 101H: Intro to Anthropology is covered in ANTH 250S: Intro to Archaeology, so 101H is redundant as a prerequisite.

ANTH 413 UG

Forensic & Mortuary Archaeology

New course

Students in the forensic anthropology option are required to complete a field experience in archaeology.  At present they can only do so by taking ANTH 353: Archaeological Survey.  The addition of forensic students to this class increases its enrollment to an unmanageable level.  Therefore, this new course is proposed to provide forensic anthropology students an alternative way to acquire an archaeological field experience.  No other department offers field archaeology courses.

ANTH 415 UG

The Emergence of Modern Human

New course

This course explores the cultural, archaeological, and anatomical evidence surrounding the emergence of modern Human from our pre-modern ancestors.  It fits squarely within paleoanthropology and complements our “Human Evolution” course.

ANTH 416 UG

Dental Anthropology

New course

Dental anthropology contributes to Human evolution studies, the study of adaptation, and to bioarchaeology.

ANTH 417 UG

Adaptation and Nutritional Anthropology

New course

This course combines two traditional areas of physical anthropology that we have not offered previously due to limited faculty.  These areas are Human adaptation (how Human adapt to their environments) and nutritional anthropology (the study of food use and nutrition as a part of Human adaptation to their environment.  Addition of a new faculty member with expertise in these areas allows us to offer a combined class covering these topics.

ANTH 430 UG

Social Anthropology

Drop one of two prerequisites

The relevant material in ANTH 101H: Intro to Anthropology is covered in greater detail in ANTH 220S: Comparative Social Organization.  Therefore 101H is redundant as a prerequisite.

ANTH 446S UG

Culture, Family Systems, and Marriage

Delete course

Low demand for course/ free resources for new courses related to the new Pd.D program.

ANTH 454 UG

Lithic Technology

New course

The analysis of lithic artifacts and debitage is a valuable skill for archaeologists

ANTH 456 UG

Historic Sites Archaeology

Change prerequisite

ANTH 101H: Intro to Anthropology is an incorrect prerequisite.  The prerequisite should be ANTH 250S: Intro to archaeology, since this is an archaeology course.

ANTH 460N UG

Human Variation

Change to lower division, renumber to 310N, change level from UG to U

We want to discourage grad students from taking this course.  They should take the new course, ANTH 510: Seminar in Human Variation and Evolution, instead.

ANTH 461 UG

Forensic Science and Technology

Renumber to ANTH 486 UG and change description

We are continuing to refine the distinction between ANTH 261N: Survey of the Forensic Sciences (renumbered to 286N) and this course.  Our plan is that 261N will focus on the crime lab forensic Sciences with a strong component of basic Science, while this course will focus on other forensic Sciences not normally practiced at a crime lab (e.g. forensic computer Science).

ANTH 462 UG

Principles of Forensic Anthropology

Change level and number to ANTH 314, Change from UG to U, change prerequisite

Discourage grad student enrollment.  Knowledge from prerequisite is critical for the course

ANTH 465 UG

Human Identification

Renumber to ANTH 414 UG, change prerequisite

Since this course focuses on skeletal remains, Osteology (ANTH 412) should be a prerequisite instead of Principles of Forensic Anthropology (ANTH 462, renumbered to 314)

ANTH 487 UG

Anthropological Field Experience

New course

We intend this course to be a bag course for a variety of organized archaeological, ethnographic, and forensic field experiences which have previously been offered under ANTH 353: Archaeological Survey, and ANTH 495: Special Topics.

Program Modification

Forensic Anthropology Option

Clarification of major subarea designations

Catalog description of the Forensic Anthropology minor is unclear and inaccurate.  We are adding several new classes and need to assign them to their correct subarea

ANTH 501

Documentary Anthropological Research Methods

New course

This course is part of the new Ph.D. curriculum.  Working with documentary sources of data is a critical skill for many aspects of cultural heritage and historical anthropology.

ANTH 502

Curatorial and Archival Management

New course

The management of collections and archives is a common task for cultural heritage professionals, especially those working for museums or federal agencies.  Therefore, we propose to offer it as part of our Ph.D. curriculum.

ANTH 503

Cultural Resource Interpretation

New course

Cultural resource interpretation is a valuable skill for cultural heritage managers, especially those who work for museums or federal agencies.  Therefore, we propose to offer this as part of our curriculum.

ANTH 510

Seminar in Human Variation and Evolution

New course

This is a graduate seminar for a new faculty member, to allow her to teach topics related to her specialty in human variation and evolution.  No other department offers courses on these topics.

ANTH 513

Seminar in Bioarchaeology and Skeletal Biology

New course

This is a new offering by a new faculty member.  Bioarchaeology is a field in which physical anthropologists articulate with cultural heritage.  Therefore, it is a critical course for the Ph.D. curriculum in Cultural Heritage Studies and Historical Anthropology.

ANTH 551

Seminar in Historical Archaeology

New course

This is a new course for a new faculty member to allow her to teach her specialty of historic archaeology.  Historic archaeology is also an integral part of the curriculum for our Ph.D. program in Cultural Heritage Studies and Historical Anthropology.

ANTH 552

Power, Prestige & Things

New course

The detection and interpretation of socioeconomic inequality in the archaeological record is a mainstream topic in modern archaeology and cultural heritage studies.

ANTH 583

Theories and Concepts in Physical Anthropology

Renumber to ANTH 511, change title (Seminar in Physical Anthropology) and shorten description

We would like to change and shorten the title to be consistent with similar seminars such as Seminar in Archaeology, Seminar in Ethnology, etc.     The description change reflect dropping the emphasis on preparing students to teach introductory physical anthropology courses, which has not been an emphasis since Prof. Smith retired in 1991.

ANTH 586

Seminar in CRM: Proposal Preparation & Contract Management

Change number/level to ANTH 601, change title to Proposal Preparation and Contract Management, and change description

We propose to change the number of these courses from 500 level to 600 level to signify that they are part of the core course sequence for the Ph.D. in Cultural Heritage Studies and Historical Anthropology.    The changes in the titles and descriptions are to broaden the focus of these courses from only CRM and archaeology to the broader arena of cultural heritage studies.

ANTH 587

Seminar in Cultural Recourse Management

Change number/level to ANTH 602, change title to Cultural Heritage Policy & Practice, and change description

ANTH 593

Professional Project

New course

We propose this bag course as a mechanism to allow our M.A. students who earn their degree with a professional project or paper to enroll in course for this work other than ANTH 597: Research.  This leaves ANTH 597 for research projects other than those directed toward a professional project or thesis.  Several other departments use the 593 number for this purpose including: CHEM, COMM, EVST, MATH, and PHIL.  Some title the course “Professional Paper” and others title it “Professional Project”.  We prefer the title “Professional Project” because some projects, such as a museum exhibit, may produce a result that it not a “paper”.

ANTH 596

Independent Study

New course

This course will allow graduate students to receive credit for independent studies project that are not research.

ANTH 597

Research

Increase repeatability to 10 cr

We propose to increase repeatability 10 in these courses, because M.A. students should be allowed to use all of the 10 credits in research/thesis allowed by Graduate School policy on either their thesis research or non-thesis research, according to their goals.

ANTH 599

Research

Increase repeatability to 10 cr

We propose to increase repeatability 10 in these courses, because M.A. students should be allowed to use all of the 10 credits in research/thesis allowed by Graduate School policy on either their thesis research or non-thesis research, according to their goals.

ANTH 600

Issues in Cultural Heritage

New course

ANTH 600 will be the first and foundational course in the core sequence for the Ph.D. in Cultural Heritage Studies and Historical Anthropology.

ANTH 694

Seminar in Cultural Heritage

New course

We envision this course as a bag course for faculty who wish to have regular formal meetings with a select group of Ph.D. students to discuss literature and issues in a specific topic.  It may also function as a “Special Topics” bag course for the Ph.D. level.

ANTH 697

Advanced Research

New course

This is a normal bag course for Ph.D. students doing research projects other than their dissertation.

ANTH 699

Dissertation

New course

This is a normal bag course for students working on their dissertation.

Program Modification

Change in course description

Faculty determined SW 350 and SW 360 need not be completed in numerical order.  Students may complete SW 360 first if they choose, offering increased flexibility.  Whichever of the two courses the student completes first, they will be required to have SW 300 as a coreq.  When they complete the second of the two courses (SW 350 or 360), SW 300 becomes a prereq.  Thus the unusual designation of SW 300 as prereq. or coreq.

New course

The course is one that specifically ties Social work students to citizens in rural communities who experience a wide array of mental health conditions and concerns but who have limited access to quality care.  The course offers an elective option for undergraduate and graduate students who are likely to practice in Montana’s rural communities.
