ASCRC Writing Subcommittee Minutes 11/30/05

The minutes were amended and approved.

Old Business-work group presentations

Workgroup one found that all courses submitted met the current criteria. Follow-up was required on several courses. The courses were approved by the committee. Review materials for FOR 342 were not received. [Latter the instructor indicated that he would let the writing designation be eliminated from the course].

The members of workgroup one have real reservations about the proposed criteria. The focus is on a narrow definition of writing and it would be possible for students to be evaluated on a single writing assignment. They recommend that the committee have a discussion on what the writing course should accomplish.

Workgroup two has not received responses to follow-up questions on two courses (C & I 187, and MUSIC 420) otherwise the courses reviewed met the current criteria. Materials were not received from English 338. However members on the committee confirmed that the English department would like the writing designation removed from this course. The committee approved the course list. It found that most of the courses would not meet the proposed criteria.

Workgroup three had difficulty evaluating courses that did not submit forms because the information needed was not included in the syllabus. It still needs conformation from the instructor of LS 151 and materials were not submitted for LS 350 and 351. Chair Hedquist will contact the department chair for clarification. Materials were also not received from English 351 and 352. Professor Bruce will contact the instructor.
