Communications:

·        Both Chair Hinman and last year’s Chair Hedquist were not in attendance, therefore Camie unofficially chaired the meeting.

·        A draft of the general education model voted on by ASCRC (8 to 4) was shared with the committee.  Members inquired when the writing committee would be able to have input. The model has and will go through many revisions before it is finalized. The committee can respond to the working model at any time.

·        Chair Hinman posted discussion items at the beginning of the week, but there were only two responses.  Members were encouraged to use Blackboard for discussion.

·        Proposals for new writing course are posted to Blackboard for review by committee members

Unfinished business was postponed for new business.

New Business:

·        A workgroup was created to respond to the general education model. Members include Nancy Mattina, Kate Ryan, Mark Medvetz, and Cedrek Jacobson.

Unfinished Business:

·        There was some discussion regarding the Washington State Writing Program samples that were posted to blackboard.   WSU took an integrative approach to revising general education that includes writing in all general education courses.  Their critical thinking rubric is good.

Comments in the ASCRC’s minutes indicate a lack of information regarding writing techniques and available support.   Faculty development opportunities are underutilized on campus.  Tools are available to assist faculty. More incentives are needed to improve how writing is taught.

The Writing Center is working closer with Composition and has been very busy with 600 visits over the past 7 weeks.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
