Communications:

·     The committee discussed the dates and available for the retreat.  The retreat will be held on January 18th from 11:00-2:00.  Camie will send out menu choices.

Unfinished business was postponed for new business.

New Business:

·          The Writing Committee and ASCRC approved ENEX 200.  Included in the proposal is that the course serve as a placement option for exceptional first year students and as a lower-division writing course.  A prerequisite for the course is satisfactory completion of ENEX 101 or direct placement into ENEX 200. This requires a revision to the writing competency catalog language.  The committee reviewed the language and approved the following.

ENEX 101. All students must complete English (ENEX) 101 with a grade of C (2.00 quality points) or better unless exempted.

Students may be exempted from ENEX 101 by transferring credit verified as an equivalent of ENEX 101with a grade of C (2.00 quality points) or better or by score on The University of Montana-Missoula placement exam. Except for those who transfer an equivalent course, students must take the placement exam. On the basis of this exam, students will be placed in either ENEX 100 or ENEX 101 or ENEX 200; or will be exempted from ENEX 101. Students placing into and completing ENEX 200, with a grade of C or better, will have satisfied both the composition course and one writing course.

One Writing Course. All students, unless exempted, must pass an approved writing course (chosen from the following list of approved courses)

There was a brief discussion of the homework assignment.  The workgroup organized to respond to the general education model met and prepared a draft Writing Course Guidelines document.   Professor Carter, Reimer, and Hedquist will send feedback on the draft to Chair Hinman.  It should be condensed, clarified, and trimmed of jargon.

The committee agreed that the requirements for upper-division writing courses should be different from lower-division writing courses.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
