Communications:

Professor Szalda-Petree explained the difficulties with revisions to general education. ASCRC is very appreciative of the work the committee has done on the writing course guidelines document.  Work on the general education model has been a trying process and has required compromises at every step.  This spring ASCRC has met with many departments and has made changes to the model to accommodate them.  Most of the difficulties have been with credit heavy programs with accrediting bodies where an additional three credit course would be a hardship to their students. The general education program needs to be flexible to meet the needs of a diverse campus.

He offered a compromise to the committee of requiring one approved lower-division writing course with a provision that departments with an acceptable justification may be granted exception to remove the lower-division restriction on this writing course.  The difficulty will be in the implementation.   The committee unanimously approved the language.

The writing committee previously discussed the possibility of amendments to the writing course document to accommodate the upper-division writing expectation.

·         Upper-division writing requirement consisting of one of the following options

o   One upper-division writing course (numbered 300-400), with a grade of C or better

o   Upper-division writing expectation defined by the department and approved by the ASCRC Writing Committee

There will be one last meeting next week to elect a chair for next year.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
