FIGs and GERs

There are more than twenty FIGs to choose from in fall semesters at UM. All FIGs contain three or four predetermined courses that fulfill UM General Education Requirements. Even if students have a pretty good idea of the subject in which they would like to major, the most appropriate first step toward graduation is on the path toward fulfilling these General Education Requirements (GERs). General Education Requirements underlie all major requirements, assuring a well-rounded education. In a FIG, the courses are linked by a common theme: "Journalism," "Human Health," "The Business World," "An American Experience." Many of the FIGs are tailored for students thinking of specific majors; all of the FIGs are designed for General Education.

When students enroll in a FIG, they are enrolled in all of the courses in the FIG. By design, the Freshman Interest Groups are not what would normally be a full course load. In most cases, FIG students should plan on taking another course or two to round out their schedules.
