    The Flathead Lake Biological Station of The University of Montana is seeking applicants for the position of Database Management Specialist.

    Primary Job Functions:
    • Assist in managing and maintaining large databases; responsible to uphold database management protocols, ensure QA/QC methods are strictly followed, ensure compliance with metadata standards, and archive and preserve integrity of incoming data
    • Help design and develop web-based interfaces for data archival and extraction
    • Assist in coordinating data acquisition and integration from scientific instrumentation
    • Instruct researchers and students in the operation of all data system interfaces on site, including data entry and documentation, database operation, text manipulation and formatting, interactive data analysis
     
    Minimum Job Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and one (1) year of relevant related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
     
    Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Demonstrated knowledge of relational database functionality and database management systems
    • Demonstrated knowledge of SQL query languages and script languages
    • Demonstrated knowledge of SQL Server, MS Access, ArcSDE; Microsoft Internet Information Server, Active Server Pages, .NET Framework, Windows Applications, Visual Basic, C#, C+, JavaScript, HTML, DHTML, AJAX, and HTTP protocol
    • Demonstrated Knowledge of QA/QC procedures
    • Demonstrated knowledge of data loggers and their output
    • Demonstrated knowledge of web design tools and protocols and programming platforms
    • Familiarity with data transfer methods; specialized/scientific data collectors; data formatting issues; and metadata standards
    • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills while providing attention to detail in work performed
    • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information effectively to diverse groups of individuals
    • Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of individuals
    • Ability to work within time constraints while remaining flexible
    • Ability to develop databases and create data check procedures/routines
     
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Academic background in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Sciences and/or related field
    • Working knowledge of and ability to create electronic charts and graphs

    GIS/Remote Sensing Analyst

    The Flathead Lake Biological Station of The University of Montana invites applications for a GIS/Remote Sensing Analyst to assist in remote sensing, classification, mapping, geomorphic and ecological analysis of aquatic habitat, wetland and riparian areas within alluvial river flood plains.  We seek candidates with the following skills:

    • A Master’s degree in ecology, environmental science, geography or related field is desired.   Candidates with a B.S and proven work experience will also be considered.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of remote sensing fundamentals including airborne and satellite optical-IR remote sensing;
    • Proficiency with image processing and GIS software (e.g., Erdas Imagine, ENVI/IDL, ArcGIS/SDE);
    • Knowledge of programming languages (C/C++, Python) and/or Definien’s Developer (Ecognition) software is preferred.
    • Ability to work in remote field sites

    The successful applicant will be employed by The University of Montana on a 12-month letter of appointment, including medical/dental and retirement benefits.  Salary range is $33,000-$38,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is based at the Flathead Lake Biological Station of The University of Montana (on the east shore of Flathead Lake between Polson and Bigfork, MT).  Appointment is for one year with the possibility of reappointment on an annual basis in accordance with applicable personnel policies and availability of funding.

    PhD Opportunities at the University of Montana

    The Division of Biological Sciences at the University of Montana (UMT) invites applications for PhD candidates to study land-atmosphere water and carbon cycle interactions using satellite remote sensing and ecological modeling. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary research team investigating the status of terrestrial ecosystems as a net source or sink for atmospheric CO2, and projected responses to global change. 

    We seek candidates with demonstrated knowledge of satellite optical-IR and microwave remote sensing; educational background in Terrestrial Ecology, Hydrology, Physical Geography or a related field; understanding of ecological and hydrologic process models; programming ability in C/C++ or similar language; proficiency with image processing/GIS software (e.g., Matlab, ENVI/IDL, Imagine, ArcGIS); proficiency in conducting independent scientific research and demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed scientific literature. Potential applicants should submit a CV and statement of research interests to Dr. John Kimball. To qualify, students must gain acceptance to the UMT Graduate program.

    The position is located on the campus of the University of Montana in Missoula, MT. Graduate research assistantships are initially offered for a 3-year period and include annual stipend and tuition waiver. Assistantships are renewed annually depending on funding availability, job and academic performance.
