Welcome to the University of Montana! The faculty and staff at the University of Montana-Missoula are pleased to welcome you to UM. We are delighted that you have chosen UM for your higher education. The transition from high school to college is not always an easy one, so we have designed a number of courses and experiences to help make the transition as smooth as possible. Go to Freshman_Programs for more information about the programs mentioned below. Your first exposure to the academic and social life of a first-year student will occur during orientation. You can select from three orientations during the summer or a fourth immediately preceding fall semester. Our first-year_orientation consistently receives very high marks from students and parents, and serves as an excellent springboard to your freshman year. UM also has four courses just for freshmen to help get you off on the right foot. Academic Convocation: On the Saturday before classes, August 23, 2008, at 4:00 p.m., UM will hold an Academic Convocation to welcome you into the academic community. Special Guests include: President George Dennison, ASUM President, The University of Montana Regents' Professors, and the Academic Deans. A reception will immediately follow. Academic Convocation Freshman Programs: We offer First-Year Interest Groups (FIGS), Freshman Seminar courses, and a University Transition class. For students wanting a review course, we also offer several courses in Learning and Study Skills. Check out our Four Bear graduation program for hints on completing your degree in 4 years. UM has a central advising location at the Undergraduate Advising Center in Lommasson Center. Staff advise first-year_orientation (and other students) who have not yet declared a major. Finally, it’s never too early to think about choosing a major and thinking about a career. To that end, we have posted information for you about choosing a major and choosing a career that we hope you will find helpful. |
