Welcome to University Transition!
Prepare for success right from the start
University Transition is a one-week program designed for incoming UM freshmen. Our goal is to provide tools and techniques to help you succeed in college and to make your first experiences with college and campus life positive.
Make yourself at home
The program occurs the week before regular Fall classes begin. Click on the University Transition Schedule to see course dates and the general schedule for the week. Move into your assigned dorm room a week early, make new friends and feel more comfortable when Fall Semester begins.
Earn a credit
University Transition focuses on the successful transition from high school to higher education. Learn valuable college preparatory skills, attend presentations by UM faculty and earn one academic credit in UNC 194 before the UM Fall Semester begins.
Designed for Incoming UM Students
University Transition introduces incoming freshman to other students and to campus life and provides academic tools to help students achieve successful college experiences.

- The dynamic process of research
Basic electronic research methods and techniques to critically evaluate internet research resources.
- Successful writing strategies Introduction to college-level critical thinking and writing skills and practice in several brief writing assignments.
- Proven academic strategies
Time management, textbook reading, active use of lecture notes, test taking strategies and more.
- The Making It Count workshop
Survival skills for the first college year and using the entire college experience to drive toward future career success.

You should attend University Transition if you:
- Are an incoming freshman.
- Want to brush up on your textbook reading, study, note-taking and test-taking skills, but need less than a full semester on those topics.
- Want a practical course based on proven strategies for academic success.
- Want to earn one UM academic credit before the semester begins.
- Are excited about moving into your assigned dorm room, meeting people and getting a feel for campus life before the semester begins.
- Consider yourself to be a highly motivated student.
- Want to get a jump-start on college.
- Are determined to have a successful university experience.

**Students attending Fall Orientation sessions on Friday morning are excused from conflicting University Transition sessions. Students should rejoin University Transition sessions when their Fall Orientation sessions are complete. |
Students must complete admission to The University of Montana and register to attend either Summer or Fall Orientation, 2008. Cyberbear registration is required for the University Transition program. Registration is limited.
To register if you are attending Summer Orientation:
Step One: Attend Summer Orientation and meet with an advisor. Your advisor will provide you with an advising number for Cyberbear registration.
Step Two: Log in to Cyberbear and register for UNC 194-01.
Cyberbear registration will be closed after August 6.
To register if you are attending Fall Orientation:
Step One: Contact Candi Merrill at 406-243-6431 or email candice.merrill@umontana.edu to reserve your seat in University Transition. You will not be able to register in Cyberbear until you attend Fall Orientation and obtain an advising number.
Step Two: Attend both University Transition and Fall Orientation. The schedules for these programs do not conflict. Obtain your advising number for Cyberbear registration from your advisor during Fall Orientation.
Step Three: Log in to Cyberbear and register for UNC 194-01.
Dorm Reservations
Students make their own arrangements for housing online at www.umt.edu/reslife, by contacting the Residence Life Office at 406-243-2611 or by sending email to housing@mso.umt.edu. If you attend University Transition and wish to move in to your assigned dorm room prior to the first housing day for the semester, Residence Life will charge you for early arrival. Students who have made housing arrangements may go directly to their assigned residence hall and check in. Visit www.umt.edu/reslife for applications, rates, important dates, policies and procedures.
Off-Campus Housing
Students living off-campus should register for University Transition and attend the get-acquainted dinner Sunday evening to pick up program packets and individualized course schedules.
