The Rann of Kuchchh hosted a Ms 7.6 earthquake on 26 January, 2001. Official casualty estimates were 19,727 dead, and 166,000 injured, although local communities claimed far greater losses. Kuchchh is far from the Himalayan front, the closest active 'plate boundary', demonstrating the complicated stress dynamics of continental deformation.
