Manipulating the Aeromagnetic data from the Former Soviet Union

I. Trick Geovu into giving up data

The first step is to trick NGDC’s Geovu into giving up data from the FSU Mag CD/Data/NGDC_GRD/ Grid subdirectories. I have not bothered to figure out how to get data from the other subdirectories but it is probably a similar process:

Start Geovu – get the most recent version from www.ngdc.noaa.gov (search for Geovu). Getting the most recent version is important; an earlier version always crashed when I tried to get data off the CD.

to get data or an image

Click: File/Set Data Source on the menu bar - click on file you wish to extract (it has to have .bin file extension). Geovu might open the data set - you hope it does. And it tells you "searches created = None" This might surprise you because you think you want an image or to export data. Yet, you are on the right track; Geovu thinks of getting data or images as a search.

Click: Search/Create

Geovu pops the "Image Search parameters" screen - you can set the grid limits by hitting the "Set search parameter Limits" command button and changing the limits.

To get an image on the screen: In the popup window: Select Image or Map Display. You get the image and can do some manipulation of that image

To get data: In the popup window: Select "Write to disk file":

In the select option boxes select:

  • ASCII XYZ File
  • none for header type
  • Hit OK
  • Geovu pops up a Save File name box – put the output in your working subdirectory. Geovu proceeds and shows you a screen as it writes your file.

II. Use SURFER to plot the data

III. Use PFDRIVER to change to USGS grid format
IV. Use the USGS Potential Field Software for filtering operations
