Thesis project:

Neo-dynamics of the Northwest Himalayas, with reference to the crustal strain accumulation and Implications for seismic hazards in Pakistan

The devastating October 8th, 2005 Kashmir earthquake refocused the attention of geoscientists on the need to have a reliable geodetic dataset to calculate high-precision rates of relative plate motions for this region. This will require monitoring of the major minor faults in the region. So this project is to continuously monitor the plate/intraplate movements using the tectonic/space geodesy techniques for calculating the stress, strain and strain rate and their combination to obtain the better constraints on earthquake recurrence in Pakistan. Installing geodetic points in the active region of Pakistan and continuously collecting geodetic observations is one of the primary objective of this research and the second phase is to process these datasets to investigate the crustal movements and strain rates.
