Thesis project:
Plate kinematics and lithosphere modeling in the Main
Ethiopian Rift:
The Main Ethiopian Rift forms a large northern
segment of the East African Rift, part of a rift triple-junction centered
on the horn of Africa. As one of the only currently active
continental rifts in the world, it is an ideal place to study the mechanisms
of continental lithospheric rupture. Utilizing GPS
geodesy techniques to construct regional strain fields and kinematic
maps will provide the ideal constraints required to accurately model the evolution
of continental lithosphere to oceanic spreading ridges during the rifting
process.
