Cenozoic Cordilleran paleogeography, terrestrial sedimentary processes, extensional tectonics, long-term geomorphology

Thesis project:

I’m studying the Cenozoic (Tertiary) sedimentology and paleogeography of the northern Big Hole basin and the Pioneer Mountains.

Cenozoic basins in the northern Rockies demonstrate several episodes, styles, and orientations of extension.  The Big Hole basin of Southwest Montana is not well studied but contains at least 4.5 km of Cenozoic sediments.  The adjacent Pioneer Mountains have been studied for their late-Mesozoic and early-Cenozoic thrust faulting and pluton-emplacement, but scattered outcrops of “Tertiary gravels” have not been characterized or dated.  This area sits just north of several other intensively-studied basins (e.g. the Grasshopper, Horse Creek, Beaverhead, Salmon, etc).  I suspect “Tertiary gravels” of the northern Big Hole basin and the north-central Pioneers constrain Cenozoic extension, uplift, and faulting and can be used to test extensional faulting models proposed for the region.

Hobbies

Compared to most Missoulans, I’m a lightweight when it comes to outdoor activities—but given all the opportunities for skiing, hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and you-name-it, I’m slowly getting better.

Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada.

Nothing against Montana, but I’m a fanatic for the high deserts of the northern Great Basin in Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and Oregon.  Landscapes appeal to my inner geographer so it’s no coincidence that I’m interested in the Cenozoic paleogeography of the Great Basin and larger Basin & Range.

Steens Mountain, eastern Oregon.
