Models of Leadership
Leadership Retreats
GLI Fellows in the Models of Leadership phase (sophomore year) will be expected to attend one of several full-day Leadership Retreats offered during the year. Leadership Retreats offer an immersion experience that allows students to build and practice leadership skills while working closely with carefully chosen leaders who represent the forefront of their respective fields. Leadership Retreats are loosely focused on GLI themes to offer different opportunities and perspectives at each. Retreats take place in the beautiful and serene Lubrecht Forest to offer a true immersion experience free from the distractions of everyday life.
Meetings and Workshops
During the Models of Leadership phase, all Fellows are required to attend three leadership events hosted at The University of Montana. These experiences are designed to give Fellows the chance to develop their leadership skills more deeply by focusing on tailored activities and smaller work groups. Workshops and meetings are facilitated by individuals who demonstrate extraordinary talents in their respective fields. Fellows will have a full academic year to complete their three required events; however, due to the limited number of events available and the need to keep events to a more intimate audience, you are encouraged to plan ahead and attend at least one during the fall semester. Fellows will have the opportunity to sign up for events two weeks prior to the start date and many events will be capped at 20 or fewer students.
Passport to Leadership
All sophomores who do not already have a passport and are U.S. citizens will have the opportunity to receive one for free. Each spring semester a Passport Day will be held in the University Center where passport officials will be present to help GLI Fellows through the steps of applying for their passports. Passports will then be mailed directly to each Fellow who attends Passport Day.
Community
Students in the Models of Leadership phase of the program will also have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of fun events organized just for those participating in the GLI program. During sophomore year you risk losing touch with those you met the previous year, but it’s also an opportunity to build more meaningful and lasting friendships. Join us for these fun events. We’ll kick things off with a BBQ, followed by a myriad of smaller happenings from volunteer events, to ice cream socials, to a night of climbing at UM’s climbing wall. Many events will have a limited capacity and Fellows will be allowed to RSVP two weeks prior to the event date. Events can be found in the Facebook group or in Moodle. As in freshmen year, sophomores are welcome and encouraged to take part in the student group responsible for maintaining a sense of community among Fellows.
