Models of Leadership
Leadership Retreats
GLI Fellows in the Models of Leadership phase (sophomore year) will be expected to attend one of two full-day Leadership Retreats offered during the year. Leadership Retreats offer an immersion experience that allows students to build and practice leadership skills while working closely with carefully chosen individuals who represent the forefront of their respective fields. Leadership Retreats are loosely focused on GLI themes to offer different opportunities and perspectives at each. Retreats take place in the beautiful and serene Lubrecht Forest to offer a true immersion experience free from the distractions of everyday life. This year’s Fall Retreat takes place November 3rd and the Spring Retreat takes place on a Saturday in April with a specific date to be announced. All GLI Fellows must attend one of these two retreats during the Models of Leadership phase.
Meetings and Workshops
During the Models of Leadership phase, all Fellows are required to attend three leadership events hosted at The University of Montana. These experiences are designed to give Fellows the chance to develop their leadership skills more deeply by focusing on tailored activities and smaller work groups. Workshops and meetings are facilitated by individuals who demonstrate extraordinary talents in their respective fields. Fellows will have a full academic year to complete their three required events, however, due to the limited number of events available and the need to keep events to a more intimate audience, you are encouraged to plan ahead and attend at least one during the fall semester. Fellows will have the opportunity to sign up for events two weeks prior to the start date and many events will be capped at 20 or fewer students.
The fall semester Models of Leadership series will feature Paul Chappell, Peace Leadership Director for the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation; Dan Nguyen, award-winning online journalist; Rodrigo Flores Gutierrez, Deputy Director of International Affairs at the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas in Mexico; Bruce Jentleson, Professor of Public Policy and Political Science at Duke University; Ken Patterson, Global Grassroots Manager at DC-based RESULTS; Genevieve Chabot, Co-founder of Iqra Fund; Maria Pascual, Science Director of the Legal Atlas; James Wingard, Legal Director of the Legal Atlas. The annual Student Leadership Conference will also be included in the Models of Leadership series.
Social Events
Students in the Models of Leadership phase of the program will also have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of fun events organized just for those participating in the GLI program. During sophomore year you risk losing touch with those you met the previous year, but it’s also an opportunity to build more meaningful and lasting friendships. Join us for these fun events. We’ll kick things off with a BBQ in Bonner Park followed by a myriad of smaller happenings from volunteer events, to ice cream socials, to a night of climbing at UM’s climbing wall. All events except for the BBQ have a limited capacity and Fellows will be allowed to RSVP two weeks prior to the event date. Students that have already participated in one of the limited capacity events will be put on a waiting list. Events can be found in the Facebook group or listed below:
- GLI Kick-Off BBQ in Bonner Park on Thursday, September 13th at 6pm. Free food and drinks will be served. All 2015 GLI Fellows are encouraged to attend.
- Service Saturday (Location TBA), Saturday, September 29th. Participation is limited to 25 students. You will receive notification that registration is open two weeks prior to the event date.
