A short-term ELI program at the University of Montana (UM) typically has the following traits:  designed for the needs of the group, two to eight weeks in duration, up to twenty hours of class per week, a minimum of ten participants, extracurricular activities and trips, opportunities to integrate into the local community.

Examples of Special Programs

De Lin Institute of Technology

De Lin University, Taiwan: This program allows students to work and play in the friendly and beautiful environment of Montana. It fosters cultural understanding through in-class activities with a diverse student population, and through authentic experiences in volunteer organizations. The program is also designed for those seeking to improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The four skills are combined in lessons so that students develop a balanced proficiency in communication.

Kumamoto High School

Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan: In Summer 2017, 19 students from Kumamoto Prefecture learned more about U.S. culture and shared Japanese culture with the UM and Missoula communities. Students took intensive English language classes in order to improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Participants experienced life in the U.S. by taking classes on campus, exploring Missoula, and traveling to Glacier National Park. An afternoon homestay experience allowed for Kumamoto students to further experience U.S. culture while sharing Japanese culture with community members.

This short-term program enhances ties between the University of Montana and Kumamoto Prefecture while further deepening the connection between Montana, U.S.A. and its sister state of Kumamoto, Japan.

Study Abroad Foundation - Summer Leadership & Entrepreneurship Program

The Summer Leadership & Entrepreneuship Program (SLEP), a partnership between ELI and the Study Abroad Foundation (SAF), brings students to Western Montana for 3 weeks of English instruction, entrepreneuship and leadership learning, and introduction to U.S. culture. In Summer 2017, students from Fuzhou, Fujian province, China took intensive English language classes and met with Missoula's business leaders and entrepreneurs to learn more about their businesses.
