 Before you Travel

You must have a valid passport issued by your government before eyou can obtain a visa to enter the United States. You will need the Certificate of Eligibility or DS-2019 for you and all your accompanying dependents. You will need this to pay the Student and Exhange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee which is required before you can make an appointment for a visa interview.

To apply for a J-1 visa you should visit the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country. This will give you guidance on what documents are required and how to schedule a visa interview. 

 Travel Hints

Please remember that you are not allowed to enter the United States more than 30 days prior to the start date on your DS-2019 or 30 days after the start date on your DS-2019.

While traveling, carry all important documents and money with you.  Do not place them in a suitcase. Check the website at for guidance on customs regulations. Please refrain from sending baggage in advance of your arrival, as the University does not have adequate storage facilities.

Agricultural and meat products are prohibited from entering the U.S.  To assure a hassle-free travel experience, without long delays, fines and confiscation of such items, avoid bringing them with you.
