Missoula - On April 24-25, 2018, a five-person delegation from the Beijing Normal University (BNU) in China visited UM. They were led by Dr. Xiaojuan Li, Library Dean at the BNU Library. She was accompanied by BNU’s Global Education Collaboration Officer and three associate library deans.

The visit followed a similar Nov. 2015 visit by UM Deans’ Delegation to BNU. Two Mansfield Library faculty were invited to lecture at BNU in March 2018, and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the BNU and UM libraries.

The Chinese delegation visited Mansfield Library and met with library faculty and staff for professional exchange sessions on library services at both institutions. Professor Xiaojuan Li introduced the services of the BNU Library.

The Mansfield Library faculty and staff presented the library’s signature programs, such as information literacy, digital initiatives, technology accessibility, and discovery platforms.

Both libraries are exploring common areas for further exchanges and collaborations.

The BNU delegation also visited the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education and Human Sciences. Interim Dean Adrea Lawrence and department chairs introduced the prominent programs of the College, such as Education Leadership, Teaching and Learning, and School Librarians’ program. The BNU delegation plans to take what they learned from UM to help train school librarians in China.

“The BNU delegation had a very productive visit at UM. The connection with the Beijing Normal University will help promote UM to the potential students in the Beijing area and in China. We are very happy to discuss common projects with our library colleagues at the BNU Library that will benefit our faculty and students at UM,” said Shali Zhang, Dean of Mansfield Library.

During their stay, the delegation met with Marja Unkuri-Chaudhry, Interim Director of UM’s Global Engagement Office, who provided critical guidance and hosted several events in making this a greatly productive visit.

The BNU delegation also met with UM President Seth Bodnar, and toured William J. Jameson Law Library, the Gallagher Business Building, and the Payne Family Native American Center.
