Program Description

The University of Montana's School of Business Administration delivers graduate programs that lead to a master of business administration (MBA) and master of accountancy (MAcct). We also offer joint programs in law and business (JD/MBA) and business and pharmacy (MBA/PharmD), and business and physical therapy (MBA/DPT). The MBA can be completed on campus in Missoula or on a part-time basis in any of seven sites throughout the State of Montana. It is the only accredited MBA program in the state and has been accredited by AACSB since 1982. UM's accounting program has received separate accounting accreditation from AACSB and is the only accounting program in Montana to achieve this. The business foundation courses, which are common to both the MBA and MAcct degree, are available over the Internet.

The School of Business Administration moved into the Gallagher Business Building fall semester 1996. The building enhances learning through its state-of-the-art design. Innovative teaching methods are utilized in the graduate programs and include case studies, computer simulations, team building and individual projects, field research, internship and international opportunities, and lectures. Small class size and personal attention improve students' graduate experience.

All programs are open to qualified graduates from any academic discipline. The programs may be started in any semester. Students with an undergraduate degree in business can earn their MBA in just one calendar year in the full-time program, or two years in the off-campus program. However, many students choose to stretch the program out over 18-24 months. MAcct students who have completed the business foundation courses and accounting fundamentals courses can receive their degree in one calendar year. Students in the joint programs may earn both the JD and MBA degrees in three years, both the MBA and DPT degrees in three years, or the MBA and PharmD degrees in five years.

Degrees Offered

M.B.A. Business Administration

The MBA program is a 32 credit-hour professional curriculum that requires 19 credits of core courses and 13 credits of elective courses. Depending on previous coursework, students may be required to take an additional 15 credits of foundation courses. There is no thesis requirement for this program; instead, we offer an integrated project course that is part of the core course requirements.

M.Acct. Accountancy

The Masters of Accountancy Degree at The University of Montana is a 30-hour professional degree program. Students enroll in the graduate (600-level) courses following completion of the Business Foundation and Accounting Fundamental prerequisite courses. With advising from the MAcct Graduate Director, students can begin the accounting fundamental prerequisites while finishing the business foundation courses. And, students may begin the electives for the MAcct while finishing the accounting fundamental coursework. The required MAcct courses, however, are generally taken after all other prerequisites have been completed.

The following joint programs are offered. Please see the MBA website for more details.

Graduate Assistantships

Both the on-campus MBA and the MAcct programs offer assistantships to qualified students. Assistants are chosen based on their outstanding academic record and GMAT scores. Preference is given to those who have completed the business foundation courses for the MBA and also the accounting fundamentals for the MAcct. Graduate students in these positions assist three or four faculty with their research, assist with course instruction through grading assignments, and may occasionally conduct a class. Graduate assistants are required to register for at least 9 credits each semester.

One additional award is restricted to a Native American. This assistant will work with a faculty member and with the American Indian Business Leaders, headquartered in the Gallagher Business Building.
