PH.D. IN SLHS ADMISSION APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Applying for admission to the Ph.D. in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences program is a four-step process:

  1. First: Contact a faculty member with a doctoral degree in the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences who conducts research in your chosen area of interest and provide a statement of interest (including an attached resume and/or background information). This faculty member can then determine a mentorship fit and discuss whether there is mentored opportunity available to accept a new PhD student in the chosen semester and year.
  2. Second: Prospective students who receive confirmation of a faculty match and an available opening with an identified doctoral faculty mentor will then secure a letter of support from this faculty member to be included in their application.
  3. Third: Students must then complete and submit their application through the University of Montana Graduate School website. Applications should include:
  • Completed application. On the application form, indicate that you are applying to the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences PhD Program (NOT the Speech-Language Pathology MS program).
  • Your full resume
  • A 1-2 page statement of interest that includes why your reasons for pursuing a PhD and for choosing to pursue your selected area of specialty
  • Three letters of recommendation: One of the letters of recommendation should be the letter of support you received from the doctoral faculty mentor of the School of Speech, Language, Hearing and Occupational who has agreed to serve as your primary research mentor in your PhD program. The other two letters can be from references of your choice. Professional and academic references are preferred to personal references.
  • Completed UM graduate school requirements (e.g., GPA, official transcripts, GREs).
  • Payment of application fee. You will be able to complete this in the application status portal after you receive the email to setup your account to finish your application.
  1. Fourth: In addition to the completed application through the UM Graduate School, you must also send your resume, letter of interest, and letters of recommendation via email to: Your chosen doctoral faculty mentor and to SLHOS@umontana.edu.

  • Fall Semester - Online applications must be submitted to and verified by CSDCAS (see above) prior to the January 15 deadline. The verification process can take two to three weeks to complete, so students are advised to submit their applications as soon as possible. If you are waiting on completed Fall transcripts to submit your application, you should submit with what you have and can update your application with the completed transcripts at a later date. Late applications will not be considered. A completed application includes official transcript(s) on file in CSDCAS.

  • Most students begin their placements with a Fall Semester start date but there have been rare opportunities for students to begin their program in the Summer in the past. Beginning in Summer semester does NOT allow a student to complete their program more quickly, but may allow for additional clinical experience.
