Integrative Microbiology and Biochemistry
Program Description
The Integrative Microbiology and Biochemistry program offers a wide range of opportunities for graduate study and research in the molecular biosciences. The faculty in biochemistry specialize in analysis of ribosome structure and function using cDNA oligomers, nucleic acid sequencing and synthesis, recombinant DNA technology, immunodeficiency diseases, metabolism, mechanisms of and resistance to antiviral drugs, enzyme kinetics and mechanisms of reaction, and cell signaling and apoptosis.
The members of the microbiology group encompass a wide range of microbial expertise. Research interests range from virology to parasitology. There is ongoing research in biochemical mechanisms underlying microbial and mammalian cell differentiation, composition and function of bacterial membranes, functions of outer membrane proteins and ribosomal proteins of pathogenic bacteria. Other research includes molecular mechanisms and immunobiology of viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections and disease pathology, host-parasite and host-environment interactions, and the molecular biology of facultative intracellular bacteria and bacterial insecticides, environmental microbiology and microbial bioremediation.

Admissions
1. Application Materials and Deadline
Fall - Priority will be given to complete application packets postmarked by January 15. Complete application packets received after this date will be considered on a space available basis.
Instructions for applying to the Graduate School are in the Applying for Admission section on this web site.
In addition to the application materials required by the Graduate School, the Division of Biological Sciences also require:
- A statement of purpose (1-2 pages).
-
A curriculum vitae.
2. Program Requirements for Admission
Admission is competitive and based on GRE scores, GPA (overall and in biology and chemistry courses), course work, letters of recommendation, other evidence of scholarly achievement, area of interest and the availability of resources.
It is not necessary that prior degrees be in biochemistry or microbiology for acceptance into this graduate program, but the applicant's background or experience should be in a closely related field. Students accepted into the program are required to have taken, or to take certain undergraduate courses considered basic for a degree in biochemistry or microbiology. In some cases, this may require taking courses that do not carry graduate credit to make up deficiencies.
Grade point average of at least 3.0 for all college work (4.0 = A).
GRE test - minimum combined score of 1100 in the verbal and quantitative ability sections.
The Integrative Microbiology and Biochemistry program does not accept GRE scores that are more than 5 years old.
