Michael Ceballos

Research Focus: XXXXXXX.....  Michael's research is supported byNSF and NASA.

Current Status:  Michael received his doctorate spring 2011. Hecurrently is Interim Director of the Native American Research Laboratory (NARL)and Research Assistant Professor in the Division of Biological Sciences at TheUniversity of Montana.

Flo Gardipee

Tribal Affiliation:Eastern Band Cherokee

GraduateLevel/Program: Doctorate—Wildlife Biology

Research Focus:  Developing a career in the area of wildlifeinfectious diseases.  A professional career as a biologist involved withconservation of threatened or endangered wildlife populations is her ultimategoal.  Flo has received numerous grants for her research on bison in YellowstonePark.

Current Status:  Flo is currently working for a stateagency in California.

Wendy Running Crane

Tribal Affiliation: Blackfeet and Tlingit/Haida

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Interdisciplinary Studies

Research Focus: Wendy'sresearch was a secondary data analysis to examine whether sociologicalvariables used to investigate youth delinquency and substanceuse apply equally across racial groups- Indian, white, and other races inMontana. She hopes to pursue a PhD someday looking further into how thecolonization of American Indian people has changed social institutions andvalues of Indian people and what effects it has had.

Current Status:  Wendy received her master's degree spring2009. She is currently home working on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana asa Victim Specialist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

John Gilham

Tribal Affiliation:Eastern Shoshone/Blackfeet

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Forestry and Resource Conservation

Research Focus:  John was chair of the Department of Forestryat Blackfeet Community College.  In that position he was responsible forboth the development of a forestry curriculum and for teaching forestrycourses.  His past work experience as a wild land firefighter, fuels specialistand forester have been very valuable in helping him to meet hisresponsibilities as an educator.  Upon completion of his graduate degree,he hopes to either continue teaching forestry or work for a land managementagency.

Current Status: John received hismaster's degree xxx?.He is working at home on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana.

Kodi Augare

Tribal Affiliation:Blackfeet

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Forestry and Resource Conservation

Research Focus:  Kodi has been working on a plan of action fora Whitebark Pine Restoration Project which is greatly needed on the BlackfeetReservation.  She has identified areas of concern to be addressed in thisproject such as cultural, social and ecological relationships interactingtogether by the restoration of the Whitebark Pine.  She believes thisproject is her cultural duty as a Blackfeet Tribal member.  At the conclusion of her Master's degree, sheplans to start a PhD and conduct a secondary data analysis focused on climatechange.

Current Status: Kodi received hermaster's degree summer 2011.

Michael O'Brien

Research Focus:  Michaelwants to pursue a career that will allow him to be involved in research, andalso allow him the opportunity to try to establish outreach programs to educatethe community, especially young students, about conservation issues.

Research Focus: Robin's career goals are to combine his educational background and his skills tobecome a key individual working for various tribal nations.  He has workedfor the Crow Tribe and for the Flathead Indian Nation as a forestertrainee.  His long-term goal is to return back to the Crow Reservationwith the foundation of working for other tribes

Michael Kohl

Tribal Affiliation: Fort PeckSioux/Assiniboine

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Wildlife Biology

Research Focus: Michaelis comparing the ecological influence of artificial water sources and on habitatuse, behavior, and movement on bison and domestic cattle.  Thisinformation will be used to manage bison and cattle according to a morehistorical grazing regime leading to increased heterogeneity important for manyprairie obligate species including grassland birds.  Michael plans to pursue a career inresearch, specifically focused on applied management questions oflarge terrestrial mammals at the landscape scale.

Michael Wassegijig Price

Tribal Affiliation:Ojibwe Anishinaabe

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Forestry and Resource Conservation

Research Focus: :Michael is conducting a remote sensing analysis of wild rice (Zizania palustris L.) on the Leech LakeOjibwe Reservation in northern Minnesota. Wild rice is a cultural and economic staple of the Ojibwe tribal community.  The techniques that he is developing will assistthe tribe in adopting geospatial technology to monitor and manage their wildrice crops within their tribal lands.  Michael'sshort-term goal is to continue into a doctoral study in remote sensing analysisof wild rice and other tribal natural resources.  His long-term goals are to: 1) developcost-effective scientific analyses in this technology which will assistindigenous communities worldwide; and 2) secure a faculty position so that hecan reach out to other tribal community members interest in this type oftechnology and research.

Current Status: Michael has currently relocated to the White Earth Ojibwe reservation in northwestern Minnesota to develop summer internship program focusing on remote sensing analysisof wild rice.  This project is funded byNASA Goddard Space Flight Center and is hosted by the White Earth Tribal andCommunity College.

Joel Adams

Tribal Affiliation: Salish/Kootenai

Research Focus:  His goal is to pursue a career in the TribalForestry Department for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of theFlathead Reservation.

Current Status:

Shandin Pete

Tribal Affiliation: Salish/Kootenai/Dińe

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Geology

Research Focus:  Shandin's goal is to pursue a career inhydrologic research with faculty affiliation at Salish Kootenai College.   He was awarded a fellowship from the Departmentof Energy that supports research in radioactive contamination in groundwaterand the subsurface soils.

Current Status: Shandin is working at home, teaching at Salish andKootenai College on the Flathead Reservation in Montana.

Antony Berthelote

Tribal Affiliation: Salish/Kootenai

Research Focus:  Antony's goal is to pursue a career inhydrologic research with faculty affiliation at Salish Kootenai College. Antonywas also awarded a fellowship from the Graduate School's grant with theDepartment of Energy.

Current Status: Antony is working at home, teaching at Salish andKootenai College on the Flathead Reservation in Montana.

John Hill

Tribal Affiliation: Crow

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Forestry and Resource Conservation

Research Focus:  John's academic goal is to obtain a master'sdegree in natural resource conservation and work with tribes in this area.During his undergraduate studies, John realized that Native American tribesface tremendous difficulties when it comes to understanding modern naturalresource management methods and policy. He plans to help his tribe and/or othertribes manage their natural resources in a sustainable manner by helping themclear the stumbling blocks associated with understanding natural resourcemanagement

Current Status: Johnis currently working in Missoula, MT as a forester with the Bureau of LandManagement.

Tony Dorame

Tribal Affiliation:Pueblo

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Environmental Studies

Research Focus:  Tony's goal is to learn to analyzeenvironmental problems in a holistic manner. He believes most environmentalproblems are very complex in nature and to fully understand them, theviewpoints of stakeholders involved must be fully understood.

Current Status: Tonyis currently working as a wildlife biologist with the Pueblo Nation in New Mexico.

Aislinn Rioux

Tribal Affiliation: Blackfeet/Crow

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Interdisciplinary Studies

Research Focus:  Aislinn's interests and goals lie inresearching and teaching statistics at The University of Montana as well as atTribal Colleges and Universities (TCU's) around the country, consulting withTCU administration, developing statistics curriculum that begins with cultural context,and indigenous educational evaluation. She aspires to serve as a conduit for both Indian and non-Indiancommunities in bridge building for Indian college students to earn their degreesand better their communities.

Current Status: Aislinn completed hermaster's degree spring 2008.  She iscurrently working towards a Doctorate of Education focusing on Educational Leadership.

Graham Woolley

Tribal Affiliation:Chickasaw

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Chemistry

Research Focus:   Grahamis interested in research involving the functionalization of heterocycles,especially in its approach to a mechanistic understanding of organometallic catalysis.

Current Status: Grahamcompleted his master's degree 200X.

Natani Pete

Tribal Affiliation: Dińe

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Computer Science

Research Focus:  Natani is working on a NSF-funded researchproject in the Department of Computer Science and is looking forward to a careerin computer programming.

Chauncey Means

Tribal Affiliation:Crow

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Environmental Studies

Research Focus:  Chauncey is studying the trace metalcontent of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation surface waters and remediation,using silica polyamine composites.

Current Status: Chaunceyreceived his master's degree spring 2011.

Kim Paul

Tribal Affiliation:Blackfeet/Shoshone/Northern Cree

GraduateLevel/Program: Master's—Interdisciplinary Studies

Research Focus:  Kim's research focus extends to BlackfeetCountry where she is investigating a possible correlation between some of thehighest cancer rates in the state and rumored waste dump sites within theboundaries of the reservation. Upon completion of her Master's degree Kim willeither go on to medical school and serve in Indian Country, or it is her planto continue through to the PhD.

Current Status: Kimreceived her master's degree spring 2011.
