Admission

Admission Application Instructions - M.A., M.S.

  • Applying for admission to the masters program in Interdisciplinary Studies is a three-step process:

First: Creation of the interdisciplinary program. As part of this process, applicants must do the following:

  1. Schedule an appointment with the Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs' personnel. Contact the Graduate School at 406-243-2572 or interdisciplinary@mso.umt.edu. The meeting can be face to face or a phone call.
  2. Find 3 faculty members from at least two different disciplines to work with you.
  3. Meet with whole committee to develop course list and program plan.

Second: Complete the Online Application.

Fill out the online application. There are three steps involved in the application process.

  1. Fill out and submit the Graduate Program portion of the application that comes up when you click the above link. An email will be sent to you with a link to setup your account and finish your application.
  2. Click the link in your email and complete the rest of the application fields and submit.
  3. You will be directed to your application status portal. You will be able to pay your application fee and upload supplemental materials on this page. You will also receive another email with a link to this page so you can log in later and complete these steps and track your application progress.

After the last meeting with your prospective committee. As part of this process, applicants must do the following:

  1. Self-report all colleges and universities attended (including grade point average).
  2. Upload Letter of Intent explaining objectives for interdisciplinary graduate studies.
  3. Upload resume.
  4. Upload MIS Program Form in place of the Writing Sample (downloaded from Program description page).
  5. Provide email addresses of each prospective graduate committee member in the Letters of Recommendation section.
  6. Pay the application fee.

Third: Request Official Scores and Transcripts:

  1. Request that official  TOEFL scores be sent to the University of Montana using code 4489.
  2. Request that official transcripts be sent to the Graduate School from all colleges and universities you have attended (excluding University of Montana). Transcripts may also be transmitted electronically through the National Student Clearinghouse.

Admission Deadlines

  • The M.A., M.S. deadline is three weeks prior to the beginning of each semester. Applications received after this date will be considered on a space available basis.

  • Applying for admission to the doctoral program in Interdisciplinary Studies is a four-step process:

First: Creation of the interdisciplinary research program. As part of this process, applicants must do the following:

  1. Schedule an appointment with the Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs' personnel to talk about the program; call 406-243-2572 or email interdisciplinary@mso.umt.edu. Come prepared to discuss your ideas for an interdisciplinary program.
  2. Find 5 faculty members from the disciplines you are combining to develop a proposal.
  3. Meet with your committee to develop the proposal, as many times as necessary.
  4. Meet with your entire prospective committee and the Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs' coordinator or director, one month prior to deadline. You must have a near final or final draft of your application proposal.
  5. Meet with and your chair/co-chair, the DIS Admissions Committee chair, and the Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs' coordinator or director two weeks prior to deadline. You must have a final draft of your application proposal.

Second: Provide Committee Chair with the application packet. The chair will submit the application packet to the program coordinator. As part of this process, applicants must:

  1. Provide DIS checklist with pages 1 and 2 completed by applicant. Page 3 will be completed by the committee after the meeting one month prior to the deadline (see item 4 above).
  2. Provide official Transcripts.
  3. Provide Letter of Intent explaining objectives for interdisciplinary graduate studies
  4. Provide 3 Letters of recommendation.
  5. Provide letters of commitment from members of the proposed committee.
  6. Provide your Curriculum Vitae.
  7. Provide the complete proposal.
  8. Collect a commitment letter for each prospective committee member.

As part of this process, applicants must do the following:

  2. Provide email addresses of each recommender, selecting no for the 'use of online recommendation'. 
  3. Pay the application fee.

  2. Request that official transcripts be sent to the Graduate School from all colleges and universities you have attended (excluding University of Montana). Transcripts may also be transmitted electronically through the National Student Clearinghouse.

Admission Deadlines

  • The Ph.D. deadline for Fall Semester is April 15th; and for Spring Semester is November 15th.
