The eighth annual meeting will take place on Saturday, April 11, 2009 in the University Center. This conference brings together graduate students and faculty from a variety of disciplines to present their research. It offers graduate students an opportunity to gain valuable professional experience by presenting their work in a formal and intellectually supportive environment. It also fosters greater understanding among graduate students and faculty of the various disciplines’ approaches to and methods of research. Conference events include: concurrent sessions of oral presentations; poster session; complimentary lunch; interdisciplinary roundtable discussion; awards for the best student posters and oral presentations; closing reception.

2008 Conference

The 2008 meeting took place on April 5 on the third floor of the University Center. There were presentations by graduate students and faculty, a poster session, a luncheon, and an award ceremony/reception. The roundtable discussion was entitled Ethics in Modern Graduate Studies. This year the panel was comprised of members of the UM community who have experience and expertise in diverse areas of ethics, especially as it relates to graduate studies and research. Panelists discussed topics such as navigating intellectual property rights with American Indian communities and conducting research with rural communities. Associate Legal Counsel and Chair of UM IRB, Dr. Claudia Denker, moderated a lively discussion with the audience and between panel members. Panel Members: Dr. Ann Cook, Director of Rural Ethics, Research Associate Professor, Psychology, College of Arts and Sciences;   Dr. Dane Scott, Director, The Center for Ethics, Associate Professor of Environmental Studies, College of Arts and Sciences;   Dr. Gyda Swaney, Associate Professor, Psychology, College of Arts and Sciences.   Discussant: Dr. Claudia Denker, Associate Legal Counsel and Compliance Officer, Chair UM Institutional Review Board.

Information for 2009

Graduate students and faculty members may submit abstracts for either oral or poster presentations. Graduate student presentations may include a portion of a thesis or dissertation or a successful seminar or course paper. We welcome the presentation of talks or posters previously presented elsewhere. To address the interdisciplinary/cross-disciplinary goals of this conference, each poster or oral presentation must include the following brief introductory components directed towards helping those outside the discipline understand the work.

This general introduction should be followed by a discipline-specific presentation, with modest adjustments in terminology, focus, or other to include a broad audience. Instructions and forms for submitting abstracts will be available on this website. Each abstract should include an introductory paragraph addressing each of the three points noted above. Submissions deadline TBA.

Conference events include: concurrent sessions of oral presentations; poster session; complimentary lunch; interdisciplinary roundtable discussion; awards for the best student posters and oral presentations; closing reception. Childcare will be available.
