Housing Information

Living in a fraternity or sorority house is affordable, safe, and fun. At The University of Montana, it is less expensive for Greek members to live in their chapter house than it is for them to live in the residence halls or in an off-campus house or apartment. This is especially exciting when you consider the convenient services available in chapter houses; most of UM's Greek facilities have excellent cooks and cleaning services, and all of the houses have laundry services.

Many homes are equipped with security systems and every sorority has a House Mother who lives in an apartment in the house. Fraternity houses abide by the same rules regarding alcohol as the residence halls: members who are 21 are allowed to consume alcohol in their private rooms, open parties are prohibited. As for the sororities, every facility is completely substance-free living; even if a member is 21 they are not allowed to have alcohol on the property. Greek women take this rule very seriously.

Greek houses are maintained and managed by a group of invested Greek men and women alumni who help students run the facilities, collect the rent, pay the bills, and perform general upkeep.

FAQ: I am a freshman student, can I live in a fraternity/sorority my first semester?

FRESHMAN RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

The University has a freshman residency policy which requires students with fewer than thirty semester credits to reside in University residence halls. Students who pledge fall semester to a Greek chapter and achieve a GPA equal to or above 2.50 for twelve or more credits may apply for exemption from the policy after initiation into their chapter, if their chapter meets the requirements stated below. The student must follow the normal process for requesting release from the residency policy. Additionally, documentation of initiation into a chapter is required. A student requesting release from the residency requirement must meet the following stipulations:

The Student Must:
1. Achieve a grade point average of at least 2.50 for twelve or more credits during fall semester
2. Be an initiated member of a men's or women's fraternity chapter that meets the requirements below
3. Be free of any University Student Conduct Code violation from the previous fall semester
4. Submit a letter to the Director of Residence Life requesting a release from the freshman residence requirement with attached documentation (proof of fraternity initiation) before the end of the fall semester

The Chapter Must:
1. Achieve an active chapter GPA of at least 2.75 during fall semester based upon the active chapter roster submitted to the Office of Greek Life prior to the end of fall semester
2. Be free of any violation of the UM/Greek Relationship Agreement or the University Student Conduct Code during the previous twelve months
3. Have begun or completed the evaluation process outlined in the UM/Greek Relationship Agreement and not currently be on probation for past evaluations

FAQ: Where are the Greek chapter houses? Click here for a map. The community is only a short walk to campus! Keep in mind, that one fraternity Kappa Sigma is a commuter fraternity which means that the chapter members do not have a facility, but do meet regularly and are an active group of individuals on campus.
