The University of Montana
Greening UM is a coalition representing all UM sustainability initiatives. It represents every eco-minded initiative on campus from those in the classroom to those in the heating plant. Specifically, this website is maintained and overseen by the Sustainable Campus Committee and the Office of Sustainability. We welcome comments and feedback and encourage all members of the UM community to be a part of Greening UM.

The UM community has a long tradition of working for environmental stewardship and democracy.
On Earth Day 2002, UM President George Dennison signed the Talloires Declaration, rededicating UM to promoting sustainable development, self determination and social justice on local, state, national and global levels. President Dennison appointed a Sustainable Campus Committee (SCC) to guide and document UM's efforts in meeting the goals of the Talloires Declaration. The SCC recognizes outstanding efforts to build sustainability with an annual Greening UM award and provides an annual State of the Sustainable Campus report delivered each Earth Week.
In 2007, President George Dennison signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), dedicating UM to reduce its carbon emissions to zero -- a key part of making UM a model for sustainability. In 2008, the Montana Governor's office called on all state agencies to reduce their energy use by 20% (relative to 2007 levels) by the year 2010. UM is working to comply with this 20X10 Initiative.
In 2008, UM achieved several milestones. UM released its first-ever Greenhouse Gas Inventory and hired a full time Sustainability Coordinator and Recycling Coordinator, creating an Office of Sustainability at the University of Montana.
