Research - Biodiesel

Photo of students boarding the BioBus

In order to create a more sustainable fuel, two UM students started a business, Sustainable Systems, LLC which makes biodiesel from the waste oil from deep fryers at restaurants. Not content with this innovation, Sustainable Systems worked with Marc Loparco of UM Dining Services to introduce a Montana grown oil into the fryers at the University of Montana.

Fryer oil produced by Montola Growers Inc. is high in mono-unsaturated fatty acids and contains no hydrogenated trans fatty acids or GMOs. This makes it better for your health, better for Montana’s economy & environment, and easier to turn into biodiesel. The oil also has excellent fryer life and does not stick to the food. And when it is no longer good for making French fries, it is made into biodiesel and used to power UM’s BioBus! Now that’s Cooking!
