The UM community has a long tradition of working for environmental stewardship and democracy. On Earth Day 2002, UM President George Dennison signed the Talloires Declaration, rededicating UM to promoting sustainable development, self determination and social justice on local, state, national and global levels.
President Dennison appointed a Sustainable Campus Committee to guide and document UM's efforts in meeting the goals of the Talloires Declaration. The SCC recognizes outstanding efforts to build sustainability with an annual Greening UM award and provides an annual State of the Sustainable Campus report delivered each Earth Week (latest schedule here).
This Greening UM web page provides information on UM efforts to
help build a sustainable and just society through RESEARCH, TEACHING,
SERVICE/OUTREACH and OPERATIONS. UM groups and community partners working on these efforts are also featured. Local sustainability events appear on UM's Community Conservation Calendar.
In 2007, President George Dennison signed the American University Presidents Climate Commitment, dedicating UM to reduce its carbon emissions to zero -- a key part of making UM a model for sustainability. UM's actions and progress will be documented here.
