Earth Week 2008 -- press release & PSAPress Release & PSA for Earth WEEK 2008 activities on at UM & in Missoula, updated April 16, 2008. Contact: Vicki Watson, 243-5153, <Vicki dot watson at umontana.edu>
UM & MISSOULA CELEBRATE THE EARTH WITH SUSTAINBILITY EFFORTS
Tuesday, April 22 is the 39th celebration of Earth Day. Many events are planned for the week leading up to Earth Day on the UM campus and around Missoula and the world. Earth Week events at UM are summarized at www.umt.edu/earthday while some of Missoula's events appear at www.umt.edu/conservationcalendar. A MASSIVE list of Earth Week activities appears at the end of this press release. Earth Week kicks off with Earth Service Day & the Ecopentathalon on Saturday, April 19. Service opportunities include river cleanup, prairie restoration on Mt Sentinel, sorting recyclables, working at UM's organic PEAS farm and helping with the Festival of Cycles in Bonner Park and recycling glass at Caras Park. “In the Ecopentathalon, Ecopentathletes ride their bikes from event to event and work at ALL the service events,” says organizer Vicki Watson of UM Environmental Studies. River cleanup is being coordinated by the Clark Fork Coalition (542-0539) which is also providing a barbecue for workers from noon-2pm at Caras Park. This year Earth Service Day coincides with Aber Day, UM's traditional campus service day, and UM's Office of Civic Engagement is helping recruit students for the service activities. After a hard day working for the Earth, celebrate at the Clark Fork Coalition's Best Dam Party (7-10pm, Caras Park, free live music by Reverend Slanky). OR enoy an Earth Service Day dance from 7:30-11pm at the Union Hall, 208 E. Main. 'The dance features easy to learn folk dances and old time fiddle music by the Parlor Pickers. All the dances are taught, and no experience or partner needed.' says Joe Laviska of the UM student chapter of the Missoula Folklore Society. Cost is $8 for public, $6 for MFS members & Earth Service Day workers; children free. Earth Celebration Day is Sunday April 20 from noon to 7pm in Caras Park. 'There will be great food, energy efficient cars, glass recycling, children’s activities, demonstrations of sustainable living & business, and live music.' says LouAnn Crowley of the Missoula Urban Demonstration Project. The public is encourage to bring clean sorted glass bottles & jars to Caras Park (from 10 am to 3pm) to feed the massive glass crusher which will spit out glass for use in construction projects. On Earth Day itself (April 22), University Dining Services will feature locally grown food at the Food Zoo in UM's Lommasson Center. “UM has been increasing it’s use of locally produced food, which shrinks UM’s ecological footprint, and helps our local economy. Local food is the finest & freshest.’ says, Mark LoParco, director of UM Dining Services. This week, Dining Services will also start two more earth-friendly initiatives --trayless serving at the Food Zoo to reduce waste (& waist lines) and re-usable shopping bags at the Cascade Country Store. The International Wildlife Film Festival will provide special screenings of this year’s festival winners for UM (which will be out of session during the festival which starts May 10). Films will be screened continuously from 8am to 11 pm on April 22 in the UC Theater. More films will be shown in the theater on Saturday April 26 from 12:30-6pm. “All you need for this feast of films is $4 and a griz card”, says Janet Rose, IWFF Executive Director. Also taking place during Earth Week is Missoula’s annual Bike Walk Bus Week and UM’s Walk N Roll –which celebrate sustainable transportation and encourage folks to ‘burn calories not oil’ while getting around our fair city. Montana Natural History Center’s annual Watershed Festival also falls during Earth Week this year. Earth Week rounds out with an E-rase your E-waste Event on Saturday April 26, from 9am to 2pm at the Missoula Fairgrounds. There you will be able to send those old computers and cell phones off for recycling. The first five large electronic items (computers, monitors, TVs) are free; additional items are $1.00 each; ten items or more, please call 800-433-8773 to register. Note that recycling is free for all cell phones, rechargeable batteries, and computer peripherals. ‘Keeping electronics out of the landfill is one important part of protecting our drinking water aquifer,’ says Michelle Hutchins of Missoula’s Water Quality District. To volunteer to help with this event, contact Jamie Silberberger at Jamie@womenandenvironment.org . This event sponsored by Sony Electronics, MT Department of Environmental Quality, Missoula Water Quality District, Vann's, Allied Waste, Women's Voices for the Earth and, PETE . ASUM Sustainability Coordinator Jessie Davie observed, “In Missoula, many people work to ensure that every day is Earth Day. But during Earth Week, we try to make more people aware of the many opportunities to take action for the Earth. And we provide lots of opportunities for them to do just that.” On Earth Day 2002, UM President George Dennison signed the Talloires Declaration, rededicating UM to promoting sustainable development, self determination and social justice on local, state, national and global levels. UM was the first university in the northwest US to sign the declaration which commits universities to working for a sustainable society in their teaching, research, service/outreach and operations. President Dennison appointed a Sustainable Campus Committee to encourage efforts by UM and campus groups to foster sustainability and to document those efforts in an annual State of the Sustainable Campus Report to be delivered each year around Earth Day. These reports are available online (www.umt.edu/greeningum) and highlight the efforts of UM, campus groups, & community partners to build sustainability over the past year. In addition, each year the Greening UM award is presented to a person who has made an outstanding contribution towards building campus & community sustainability in the past year.
