GREENHOUSE GASSES

PRESIDENTS CLIMATE COMMITMENT
February 2007, President Dennison became one of the first 100 signatories to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. By signing the commitment he pledged to make The University of Montana more sustainable and to "ultimately neutralize greenhouse gas emissions on campus."

As a part of the commitment the University agreed to take two immediate tangible actions, starting within two months of becoming a signatory. UM’s two actions are:

I. Energy Star Procurement Policy

II. Provision of Public Transportation

GREENHOUSE GAS INVENTORY

In September, 2008, UM released it's first-ever Greenhouse Gas Inventory. View the Inventory Report.

CLIMATE ACTION PLANNING

The University of Montana is in the process of creating a Climate Action Plan that documents analyzed and prioritized strategies to reduce and neutralize its emissions of green house gases. A range of recommendations will be developed over the next few months and proposed to the President for approval. The plan incorporates the Green House Gas Inventory completed in 2008 that identifies primary sources of emissions. Both the inventory and the plan are intended to be first steps in creating a climate-neutral campus and are expected to be flexible, dynamic documents regularly updated based on new information regarding quantity of emissions, emission sources, funding, and technology.
