Volunteer

Volunteering for the Griz Glow 5K is an awesome experience! Give back to the community, meet new people, add to your resume and/or complete volunteer hours for class or your Greek chapter. If you are interested in volunteering for the event, please email campusrec.youthcamps@mso.umt.edu.

Roles

Check-In

These volunteers show up slightly before check-in and are stationed at tables in the UM Golf Course pro shop. They spend the hour before the race begins checking in registered participants, giving them their race packets (each containing a t-shirt, led bracelet and glow necklace) and answering questions.  One or more volunteers may also sell glow accessories.

Pre-Race Entertainment

During the hour between the start of check-in and the start of the race, participants are encouraged to participate in our pre-race festivities.  These usually include music, face painting and dance, for example.

Course Marshal/Race Safety

Course marshals serve as information centers throughout the course.  Common questions include:

  • How long does the race usually take?
  • What is the quickest way back to the starting line/finish line?
  • How much farther is it to the finish line?

If there is an emergency such as an injury or participant who otherwise does not feel fit to complete the course, these volunteers can also call for a golf cart to pick up participants and take them back to the beginning of the course.

Another function course marshals fulfill is directing runners and ensuring that they stay on course.  It will be dark during the race, and, although the course is clearly marked with strobing LED path lights, participants could become disoriented and go astray.  Course marshals will be stationed at curves in the course to show runners which way to go with glowing traffic batons.

Glow Zone Entertainment

On the course there are six Glow Zones spaced out fairly evenly along the route. A few examples of Glow Zones we have featured in the past are hooping and fire performance by the UM Circus Club, live music, lightsaber battles with the UM Fencing Club and a giant slip and slide.

We're happy to place individuals as volunteers at Glow Zones, but we're also looking for bands, clubs, businesses and other groups to host them.  Please contact us if your group or business would like to partner with Griz Glow to host a Glow Zone.

Course Teardown

At the end of the race, a crew of volunteers make sure that all participants have completed the course.  Once the course is cleared, they then collect all of the markers and Glow Zone supplies.
