The University of Montana has set up a process by which people working or studying at the University in an unofficial but closely associated manner may obtain access to a variety of University resources. A Griz Card provides access to the recreation center and controlled rooms and allows the owner to use the UMoney and commuter meal plan options. A NetID provides online network access to campus wireless, Blackboard, remote library resources, and OneStop. The level of access to these resources is controlled through the approval process in the appropriate office as described below. There are two types of affiliation, Affiliates and Griz Visitors.
A Griz Visitor is associated with The University of Montana through some contractual, collaborative, or familial relationship that requires the use of a Griz Card.
An Affiliate is associated with The University of Montana through some contractual or collaborative relationship that requires the use of a Griz Card and a NetID for online resources.
Use of the UM Recreation Center is dependent on specific approval by the authorizing person. Once approval is granted, affiliates and Griz Visitors can obtain a Griz Card at the Griz Card office in the University Center and proceed to the UM Recreation Center for payment and access.
All Affiliates and Griz Visitors must apply for the status on a yearly basis. The default expiration is September 30 of each year but may be earlier depending on the specific resource need.
Campus Affiliates and Griz Visitors are associated with an external organization that works closely with the University such as the UM Foundation or the UM Bookstore
Alumni Griz Visitors must be annual dues-paying or lifetime members of The University of Montana Alumni Association and must have completed the minimum academic requirements to qualify as a UM alumnus/a.
Faculty Affiliates and Griz Visitors are associated with an academic department or organization of the University for the purposes of teaching or academic oversight.
Student Affiliates and Griz Visitors are associated with the University but not currently registered such as short term international students or students on medical leave.
Dependent Affiliates and Griz Visitors are associated with a currently registered student, current employee, current faculty affiliate, or current campus affiliate of UM through a familial relationship such as spouse or child.

Once the Affiliate or Griz Visitor has completed the approval process and is entered in Banner with a University ID the person can obtain a Griz Card at the Griz Card office in the University Center.
Twenty four hours after the affiliate has completed the approval process and is entered in Banner with a University ID the person can utilize online services which include:
To access these services the NetID should be used for authentication purposes. See http://umt.edu/it/accessres/NetID.aspx for information on NetIDs and the associated password.
All Affiliates can go to CyberBear and set their UMontana alias to point to an email account of their choice in order to receive emergency emails. They can also enter a cell phone number to receive emergency text messages.
See http://umt.edu/it/email/umalias.aspx for more information on the UMontana alias.
