Living Learning Communities

Living Learning Communities (LLC) offer unique residential experiences by merging classroom learning with students' out of class experiences. Students with a common academic or social interest will live together on the same floor or wing of a Residence Hall allowing the community to have focused programs and a shared interest amongst community members in a specific topic area.

In some Living Learning Communities, students will also share an academic course. This gives students easy access to study partners, floor programs focused on the living learning community, and additional access to faculty members. UM Housing offers multiple living learning communities for students with a variety of interests to enhance their academic experience.

Community Options

UM Housing offers a wide range of community options across the Residence Halls for students depending on their academic and social interests. Community options include:

  • First-Year Seminar Residential Cohort
  • Franke Global Leadership Initiative Community
  • Gender Inclusive Community
  • Honors Living Learning Community
  • Intercultural Living Learning Community
  • Outdoor Recreation Living Learning Community
  • Pre-Health Sciences Living Learning Community
  • Physics Living Learning Community

Co-Ed by Room Community

Most of our Residence Halls are co-ed with separate wings or floors for men and women; however, the 4th floor of Miller Hall is co-ed by room. While room and roommate assignments on this floor are still made based on gender, male and female rooms are dispersed throughout the floor in a checkerboard style, rather than being separated by wing or floor. There is a separate male communal bathroom and shower room on one side of the floor and female communal bathroom and shower room on the other.

This floor is opt-in and offers a different type of housing environment for students who for various reasons may feel more comfortable or be more interested in living on a floor/wing that is not all the same sex as them. No student will be placed in this community unless they specifically request this housing option.

Substance Free Community

In addition to the Living Learning Communities, UM Housing also offers Substance Free Floor Options. Students that have an interest in living a substance free life (no alcohol, drugs, or tobacco) can choose to live together in a community in Aber Hall. You may note your interest for this community on your housing application.
