Primary Functions

Production-oriented department seeks outstanding teacher with research experience in theatre history, dramatic literature, theatre pedagogy, and performance studies to assume a pivotal role within vibrant theatre training programs in a liberal arts environment. This is a tenure-track position.

  • Principal teaching will be in the following courses: Methods of Teaching Theatre, Theatre History I and II, Dramatic Literature, Performance Theory and Criticism, and various levels of Acting.
  • Course load may also include Theatre Appreciation or a General Education course.
  • Successful candidate will teach four courses per semester, assist in strengthening the BA program, and provide oversight to graduate students in their teaching of non-majors.
  • Other responsibilities include student advising and serving on departmental and university committees.
  • Possible additional responsibilities include providing leadership to Acting/Directing division, directing one mainstage production, and leading in the development of curriculum.
  • Qualifications

  • Ph.D. (MFA in Theatre with exceptional and significant academic and research experience and/or a strong record of scholarly publication may be considered).
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, including one to three years of teaching experience in higher education
  • Demonstrated intellectual rigor and academic abilities essential for successful interaction with graduate students, undergraduate students, and colleagues in theatre performance and learning/teaching theory
  • Strong background in theatre history, theatre pedagogy, dramatic literature, performance theory, and acting

    Demonstrated leadership ability and background in dramaturgy will strengthen a candidate's application.
  • Program Overview

    The Department of Drama/Dance is part of the School of Fine Arts, which includes art, music, drama/dance, and media arts. BA, BFA, MA, and MFA degrees are offered. The department consists of thirteen faculty and six staff positions. Modern performance spaces include a 500-seat proscenium theatre, a multiform theatre, and a dance studio. Support spaces include scenery, props, costumes, lighting, and sound production shops. The Montana Repertory Theatre (a touring Equity company) is in residence and integrated with the training programs. The University of Montana is a member of the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).
