The University of Montana – Missoula seeks nominations and applications for an energetic and innovative person to serve as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the college, whose duties include leadership and strategic development; hiring, retention, development, diversification, and evaluation of the faculty; resource development, including private fund-raising; budget development and oversight; and general administration with a dedication to pursuing excellence in academic and scholarly endeavors.
The Mission of the College of Arts and Sciences is to pursue academic excellence by providing unique educational experiences through integration of the liberal arts, graduate study, and professional training with international and interdisciplinary emphases. This is achieved through:
Departments and programs in the humanities, natural and physical sciences, and social and behavioral sciences offering high quality educational experiences and a curriculum to engage CAS majors, as well as students from the professional schools and colleges seeking foundation training and electives.
CAS courses that build foundational knowledge and skills, breadth across disciplines, habits of inquiry and problem solving that inform students’ studies, careers, and personal lives in positive ways.
Encouraging and supporting teaching and research integrated across traditional disciplines in collaborative and interdisciplinary ways, both within the College and across the University.
Exemplary faculty members who strive to be effective teachers and mentors as well as scholars and researchers generating new knowledge in their own fields.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
An earned doctorate in an academic discipline
An outstanding record as a faculty member, including teaching excellence, a record of scholarly distinction, and service in the broadest sense, demonstrated through achievement of the rank of Full Professor at a major institution of higher education
A demonstrated commitment to the ideals of a liberal arts education applicable to the twenty-first century
Five years of administrative experience in a university context
Commitment to the application of high academic standards
Evidence of effective leadership and the ability to nurture growth in people and programs
The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences reports to the Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs and will receive a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
