Primary Functions

  • Responsible for the management, oversight, and participant supervision of The University of Montana’s portion of the Big Sky Science Partnership granted by the NSF for science education aimed at improving American Indian student achievement in grades 3 through 8
  • Builds and maintains collaborative ties with higher education and K-12 educators; directs the activities of program employees; coordinates activities with participating institutions of higher education, schools, and tribes; develops questionnaires and evaluation materials & communication and publication materials; tracks research data; manages day-to-day activities of the UM site
  • Develops plans for teacher recruitment and retention; disseminates program information; participates in creation of distance learning strategies (including but not limited to: on-line courses, websites); develops strategies for collaboration with other like programs
  • Responsible for budgetary oversight (accounting functions, purchasing, compensation documentation, travel, reconciling accounts); program and grant reporting
  • Responsible for program communication and public relations events, activities, and outreach
  • Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a physical science and/or science education and two (2) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of program management practices and procedures; short- and long-term strategic planning experience; accounting principles; budgetary techniques; grant management practices and procedures
  • Demonstrated experience developing science education outreach program or similar programs
  • Effective public relations, interpersonal and oral communication skills with the ability to create and maintain positive relationships and work with a diverse group of individuals
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and execute meetings
  • Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures with the ability to train and lead program participants
  • Demonstrated written communication skills, including scientific or technical writing skills; ability to draft, edit, and layout materials for the intended audience
  • Ability to develop program evaluation tools; prepare program summarizes and/or year-end reports
  • Demonstrated skill in the operation of personal computers and related word processing, spreadsheet, and database software with the ability to learn new software
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills with the ability to work independently in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality; maintain accurate records and files
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Montana driver’s license; must be able to travel throughout Montana and out of state on an occasional basis
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with a physical science and/or science education emphasis
  • Experience working with teachers and administrators in western Montana K-8 schools
  • Familiarity with science standards and curriculum in K-12 education
