I. Policy
Federal law requires that the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) make recommendations to the Institutional Official (IO) for development and administration of animal care and use training programs for all personnel involved in the use of animals in teaching or research. Animal users require training in order to ensure that all persons involved in animal care and use are:
- Informed of IACUC and Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) policies and procedures regarding animal care and use at The University of Montana;
- Informed of available resources regarding animal care and use certified by accrediting and oversight agencies including the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA);
- Verified to be technically proficient and fully capable of their responsibilities for animal care and use covered under their Animal Use Protocol (AUP); and
- Provided training and offered participation in the risk-based Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) program.
It is the policy of The University of Montana IACUC to provide and document a comprehensive training program for all animal users.
II. Procedure
- Administrative Responsibility
- It is the responsibility of the IACUC Coordinator to:
- Maintain individual records of animal user training,
- Provide instructions for use of the CITI Online Laboratory Training Courses web training site,
- Provide occupational health and safety (OH&S) materials, including a summary of hazards and instructions for OH&S program participation.
- It is the responsibility of the AV and persons approved and designated by the AV to
- Conduct regularly scheduled training sessions for animal users requiring access to LAR facilities,
- Conduct training for field researchers, visitors, contractors, and new animal users as reasonable and necessary.
- Documentation of Training
- The IACUC Coordinator will maintain individual files for all animal users that will include
- Formal group training sessions,
- Individualized training provided by AV, LAR employees, or invited specialists,
- Quarterly monitoring for fulfilled training requirements for initiation or continuation of Griz card access to LAR facilities
- All training documents will be made available by the IACUC Coordinator to the IACUC, federal regulatory personnel, or any other qualified inspector on demand.
- Training Program
- New laboratory animal users must complete the following training prior to receiving authorization for Griz card access to LAR facilities or conducting laboratory or field research with animals.
- Safe and proper use and exit of LAR facilities
- OH&S training relevant to work and instructions for participation in OH&S program
- Basic animal husbandry, handling, and health as evidenced by completion of applicable species module on the CITI training web site
- All laboratory animal users are required prior to work on an approved AUP to,
- Complete user-specific training module(s) on the CITI training web site (http://www.citiprogram.org) determined by the animal species included on the AUP under which they are working and procedures being performed (update online training every 3 years).
- To use the CITI web site for the first time, select "Register Here"; choose Univ of Montana from the list of institutions; fill out your username (email address is good), password and member information; page heading "Select Group - U. of Montana, at bottom of page select "Continue to question 1 at this time;" check the appropriate course(s) that you want to take; are you a VA member? select "No"; "Learners Menu": take the course(s) you have selected and take the related quiz; send an email to kathryn.mariucci@umontana.edu stating that you have completed the courses required.
- For subsequent uses of the web site sign on using your unique user name and password; select "Learners Menu" and scroll to the bottom of the page; select the course(s) you wish to take.

- “Working with Rats”
- “Working with Procedures That Cause More Than Momentary Pain and Distress”
- “Working with Rabbits”
- “Working with Guinea Pigs”
- "Working with Frogs, Toads or Amphibians"
- "Working with the IACUC"
- Attend didactic laboratory animal user training (attend once each year)
- For LAR facility users, including facility entry/exit, OH&S updates, and basic animal husbandry
- For all Principal Investigators with active AUPs and for post-docs, research personnel, and students involved with animal research
- All wildlife users are required prior to work on an approved AUP to,
- Review the online Wildlife Training Presentation and complete the Wildlife Handlers Quiz on the UM IACUC web site (www.umt.edu/iacuc). Go to Training and follow the links and instructions. Send completed exam to kathryn.mariucci@umontana.edu. The on-line Wildlife Handlers Quiz will be updated every 3 years.
