Conditional Admission

Students do not need to be conditionally admitted to a graduate program at the University of Montana to participate in the PMBP. The program is an innovative foundation from which students can prepare to apply to a graduate program at any university in the United States. A stream lined process for PMBP students to be considered for conditional admission to a graduate program at the University of Montana does exist, however, and additional information about it can be found in the sections below.

1. Requirements

Graduate Programs at the University of Montana have the ability to craft tailored terms of conditional admission for students wishing to participate in the Pre Masters Bridge Program (PMBP).  These terms are intended to provide a clearly defined and academically rigorous pathway for students to transition from being conditionally admitted to the PMBP to being fully admitted [to a graduate program].  The PMBP coordinator will share those terms with prospective PMBP students and/or their sponsors.  Before being conditionally admitted to the program they will need to agree to those terms.

PMBP conditional terms of conditional admission will be defined in a general yet standardized template.  Examples of some of the terms may include:

  • A minimum GRE score and the date by which that score must be accomplished
  • A minimum TOEFL score  and the date by which that score must be accomplished
  • Upper-division undergraduate courses (in the student's discipline) and required levels of achievement in each (e.g. at least a 90% in a upper-division, undergraduate course)
  • Requirements to remain in a graduate program if a successful transition from being conditionally admitted to it is accomplished.  This can include items such as the maintenance of a minimum GPA.

Not all students will be conditionally accepted – that determination will be made by each graduate program after their review of the PMBP application.  It is important to note that students can still participate in the PMBP without being conditionally admitted to a graduate program.  It provides a strong foundation from which students can apply to graduate programs at UM and to institutions across the U.S.

2. Departments

The number of graduate programs participating in the PMBP is anticipated to increase as it develops. A list of those participating programs will be posted here – check back for updates!
