Zagalo-Melo, Paulo Dr.

Dr. Paulo Zagalo-Melo is the Director of the Office of international Programs at the University of Montana.

For the past six years, he was Director for Science, Technology and Innovation at the Portuguese-American Foundation, being responsible for modeling, budgeting, negotiating, and monitoring grant programs, student and faculty exchanges, publications, and institutional partnerships involving Portuguese and US academic, governmental, and nongovernmental institutions.

Before, he worked for the Fulbright Commission in Portugal, having served as Administrative Officer (1993-1996), Acting Executive Director (1996), and Executive Director (1997-2006). He was peer-elected for three consecutive terms in the Executive Committee of Fulbright Directors from Europe and Israel (1998-2003). Prior to joining Fulbright, he worked for Ernst & Young.

Other management and project coordination activities include EU Project Coordinator (2010-2013) for IMPACT, and project co-founder and coordinator of Future Citizenship.

Paulo Zagalo-Melo has a Ph.D. degree in Political Science from the Catholic University of Portugal (2012), and a Master in Public Administration degree from Harvard University (2004).

He was a Visiting Scholar at the Political Science Department of the University of Colorado at Boulder (2008/2009 and 2011), and a Visiting Professor of the Institute of Political Studies at the Catholic University of Portugal (2009-2012).

Quincie has been teaching ESL since 1995 and has been at the ELI since 2001. She has taught in Portugal, in the United Arab Emirates and at Colorado State University, where she earned a master’s degree in TESOL. She is also an alumna of the University of Montana, where she earned a Master of Public Administration degree.

Baker, Peter

Baker, Peter

Peter joined the Office of International Programs in 2011 after five years at the U.S. Department of Education, four of which were in the Department’s International and Foreign Language Education Service. After graduating from the University of Montana in 1999, he served in Kyrgyzstan as a Peace Corps Volunteer and received his master’s degree in secondary education in a Peace Corps Fellows program while teaching on the Navajo Nation. As the University’s International Development Officer, Peter works to strengthen linkages with overseas institutions; identify funding opportunities to support international education; increase the number of international students studying at the University; develop and monitor the international component of the University’s strategic plan; and create systems to enhance international-focused linkages between individuals and groups on campus.  He is also the coordinator of the university’s new Pre Masters Bridge Program (PMBP) which is scheduled to start summer 2013.  In his free time Peter likes trail running, traveling, hiking, and subjecting family and friends to his mediocre cooking.

Ariel Barrett was born and raised in Missoula, Montana.  She has been actively involved with international friends and foreign cultures since childhood.  Over the years, Ariel and her family have befriended many international students who have attended the University of Montana.  Ariel has also traveled around the world both to study and to explore.  Her love of different cultures led her to study Anthropology.  Ariel studied Cultural Anthropology at the University of Montana where she received both her Bachelor's degree and Master's degree.  Ariel loves to travel and learn about the many cultures and practices found around the world, but she will always call Montana home.

Breckenridge, Heather

Heather began working and teaching ESL for the Summer Language Programs at the University of Montana in 1999. She has taught in Korea, in Taiwan, and at the University of Montana, where she has been teaching at ELI since 2004. She earned a Master's degree in Bilingual / Multicultural Education from Northern Arizona. In addition, she earned a TESOL and Secondary English Teaching Licensure and a certificate to Teach English as a Second Language.

Castillo, Jeanie
Jeanie Castillo, M.A. in Linguistics, is an instructor, writer, and curriculum designer with 15 years of experience developing and teaching courses in a variety of fields including English language instruction, academic writing, linguistics, and career and business development. Her teaching career began at the American English Institute in Fresno, California which served international students seeking to improve their English-language abilities in order to enter an American university. Jeanie later taught academic writing at the University of California at Santa Barbara, the University of New Mexico at Gallup, and online for the University of Phoenix. Currently, she teaches face-to-face and online classes for the University of Montana in the Linguistics Program and for the English Language Institute.

Ellersick, Linda

Linda has worked in the Office of International Programs since August 2010.  She advises incoming and outgoing study abroad and exchange students through all phases of studying abroad.  She also coordinates the necessary steps and processes to help students earn credit for and get the most out of their study abroad experience. She has a BA in International Affairs, a Masters in Latin American Studies, and a Teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language Certificate.  As part of her studies and research, she has traveled to Mexico, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.  In her free time, she enjoys practicing Aikido and yoga, gardening, traveling, rafting, boating, cooking, trying new foods, and hiking with her dogs.

Fluck, Udo Dr.

Udo Fluck holds a Ph.D. and two Master’s degrees with an emphasis in multicultural education, instructional media design and technology. During the past decade, he has worked as a curriculum developer, faculty member and cross-cultural researcher in Germany and the United States. Since 2005, he has been teaching courses in cross-cultural and global competence building across campus in various academic and service departments. He maintains an active, nationally recognized research program, which utilizes a unique, interactive and award winning instructional approach.  He has traveled extensively in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, and of course the United States of America, and to a lesser degree in Spain, England, Belgium, Holland, Canada and Mexico. He enjoys cooking, photography, skiing and classical music.

Nancy Gass is the Director of Fiscal and Personnel Services in the Office of International Programs.  She has worked for the University of Montana for 17 years and loves being on campus.  She has extensive accounting expereince and has provided fiscal management for more than 50 special langauge programs and traning projects.  Nancy holds a dual B.A. degree in International Programs and Mandarin Chinese, spent time studying in China, and has extensive travel experience in Asia.   More recently, she began working on her M.A. in Public Administration at the University of Montana.  Nancy is a current member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO).

Janusch, Sandra Dr.

Sandra is a dual citizen of the US and Canada. Originally from California, Sandra received a PhD in TESOL from the University of Calgary in 2007. She has lived and taught ESL in China, the US, Vietnam, Canada, the Netherlands, France and Indonesia. Sandra has had extensive experience in training teachers of English as a second language, managing ESL/EFL academic programs, and in teaching online courses in pedagogy and second  language learning at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In her spare time, Sandra enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her family.

Kato, Michelle

Michelle has worked in the Office of International Programs since June 2012. She is responsible for answering incoming phone calls for the office, as well as for the director. She is also responsible for general office tasks but also works together with internal programs such as the Study Abroad Program and the Pre Masters Bridge Program. Michelle holds a BA in Japanese. She studied abroad for one academic year at Kumamoto University in Japan, but has traveled to Canada, Mexico, Sweden, Denmark, and Korea. In her spare time, she enjoys running, traveling, soccer, reading, and fishing.

Kellum, Allyson
Allyson Kellum grew up in Montana but has spent most of the last decade outside the US.  She taught in elementary school in Seoul, South Korea for two years.  She has also taught and trained teachers in Japan, Honduras, Nicaragua, Russia, and the US.  Allyson holds a M.A. in Applied Linguistics and loves nothing more than sharing and learning through working in the field of international education.

Lofink, Brian

Brian Lofink is the Associate Director for International Events and Campus/Community Collaborations for the Office of International Programs (OIP) at the University of Montana (UM).  His position requires him to work collaboratively with UM and community leaders that focus on international matters. Mr. Lofink works closely with a wide range of individuals and groups on campus and in the community and beyond to develop and carry out the mission of OIP and implement recommendations made internally, by UM’s administration.  In his position, he is responsible for organizing and implementing the logistical aspects of international visitations and conferences.  Also, he coordinates OIP’s communication and interaction with various Missoula-area organizations regarding UM’s (and frequently the community’s) international activities and matters, such as Missoula’s Sister-City Program or delegations from abroad that are visiting Missoula and/or Montana.    In addition, Mr. Lofink has extensive experience in working in educational training programs.  He has managed or participated in more than 20 professional educational development training programs.  Programs have been funded by agencies such as but not limited to the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, U.S. Department of Education, and American Councils for International Education (ACCELS).

Lee Ann has been at the English Language Institute (ELI) since it began in 1993. She has traveled extensively; she taught in San Francisco and Japan before coming to Missoula. Smith, Sara

Sara Smith graduated from The Davidsons Honors College at the University of Montana in 2009 with a BA in Anthropology and minors in Irish Studies and Geology. She has worked with ELI since August 2010, and in addition to providing key administrative support for ELI students and staff, Sara is responsible for corresponding with prospective students, processing ELI applications and immigration documents, and assisting newly arrived ELI students with orientation to the UM campus. She also maintains the department’s website and Facebook page, using them to maximize communication with students. She is responsible for the Volunteer Experience program, which helps place ELI students in volunteer organizations throughout Missoula, and is the logistics coordinator for ELI cultural activities and field trips. Sara is also the program coordinator for special language programs at ELI and has worked with groups from all over the world. Sara is a native Montanan and loves living in Missoula. Her hobbies include hunting, fishing, reading, and playing in the snow.

Unkuri-Chaudhry, Marja

Marja Unkuri-Chaudhry is the Director for Study Abroad and Student Exchanges at the University of Montana. She directs UM’s study abroad programs as well as faculty and staff exchanges and oversees UM’s exchange agreements. She has 16 years of experience working in International Education and has taught as an Adjunct Professor of International Law in UM School of Law. She has a J.D. degree from University of Helsinki and a Graduate Law degree from George Washington University in International and Comparative Law, where she studied as a Fulbright Scholar. A native of Finland, she also worked as an attorney in Finland for several years. Marja has presented several times at international conferences on Risk Management in Education abroad and she is currently serving her third term representing the University of Montana in the Council of Advisors of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP). She has traveled to thirty countries and she has lived in Austria, Germany, and Sweden. Marja loves hiking, running, and skiing.

Willis, Lisa

Lisa began teaching ESL during her AmeriCorps Experience in Washington State in 2003. Since then she has taught ESL and third grade in Minnesota. She has traveled extensively in Turkey, Costa Rica, Australia, France, and England. She earned a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Montana State University and an ESL endorsement from Western Washington University. Lisa holds a Montana teaching license, ESL endorsement and TESOL certificate.
