Vice Rector Vides from the Catholic University of Salta, Argentina visited The University of Montana campus to strengthen the institutional relationship with a particular focus on research and collaboration with the College of Forestry.

Kyrgyz graduate student arrival, May 24, 2008
The University of Montana welcomes the first of two graduate students from Kyrgyzstan who will receive her master's in Curriculum & Instruction. Her is education is made possible  by a grant UM received from the Kyrgyz  Ministry of Education using Asian Development Bank funds.

Kyrgyz Study Tour, May 4 - June 1
Asian Development Bank funded twenty-four educators and administrators from Kyrgyzstan to come to UM to participate in an intensive professional development focusing on curriculum and learning material development.

Shenzhen Training Program, September 27-December 8, 2007
From September 27 to December 8, International Programs, in collaboration with the School of Education, will provide a custom designed training program for 42 administrators and teachers from the Shenzhen municipality in China.  The program consists of sharing U.S. methodology and pedagogy, school observations, English language training and cultural programming.

Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program, August-December 2007
UM welcomes 9 international students for the Fall 2007 semester on the Near East and South Asia (NESA) Undergraduate Exchange Program. The NESA Undergraduate Program is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and U.S. Department of State and is administered by Georgetown University's Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED).

Central Asia Conference, October 2006

The conference focused on the reintroduction of the history and civilization on the peoples of Central Asia.  This conference concentrated on Tajikistan and the Tajik people of Central and South Asia.

UM Delegation to Potsdam, Germany, October 2006

A UM Delegation headed by Dean Jerry Fetz visited the University of Potsdam, UM’s partner university.  The delegation included members of the MCLL Department, Elizabeth Ametsbichler and Hiltrud Arens, as well as Klaus Uhlenbruck, from the School of Business.  Lynne Koester, who is conducting research in Germany, also joined the delegation.

President Dennison, Dr. Mehrdad Kia, Director of International Programs, and Dr. David Forbes, Dean of College of Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences visited several universities including the University of Leiden, Moscow State University, and Charles University.  In Moscow, Professor Leonid Kalachev joined the delegation.  An agreement was signed with Charles University.

Music of Bhutan, September 18, 2006
Jigme Drukpa, a leading vocalist in Bhutan's Zhungdra and Boedra traditions performed at UM. With lute, dulcimer, song and stories, Jigme illuminates the roots of Bhutanese culture.

Egyptian Education Supervisors Training Program, June 17-July 1, August 5-19, 2006

The Office of International Programs, in collaboration with the School of Education, provided approximately 56 middle level education supervisors from Egypt with two-week opportunities to observe and study different models and practices of a decentralized standards-based supervision and appraisal system in the U.S. The project was a USAID Grant from the Academy for Educational Development (AED).

UM Delegation to Italy, June 26-July 1, 2006
Dr. Jerry Fetz, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Mehrdad Kia, Director of the Office of International Programs, visited several universities in Italy including Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale “Amedeo Avogadro”, Università degli Studi di Torino, and Università degli Studi di Siena. An agreement was signed between UM and Torino during the visit. Plans for an agreement with Siena were also discussed.

UM Delegation to Tajikistan, May 26-June 9, 2006
A UM delegation including Professors Rick Graetz, Jeff Gritzner, Sarah Halvorson and Ardi Kia from the Geography Department as well as Yvonne Gritzner from the Montana Committee from the Humanities and photojournalist Susie Graetz, visited Tajikistan from May 26 to June 9. The trip included visits to UM's three partner universities: Kurghon Teppa University, State University of Kulob and Tajik State National University.

Visit by Her Excellency, Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, May 16, 2006
President McAleese visited The University of Montana on Tuesday, May 16. During her visit she helped launch UM's new Irish Studies Program. She gave a public address at 2:30 PM in the University Theater.

Record Number of International Students Enroll at The English Language Institute, January 2006
As of January 26, 2006, there were 45 Saudi students enrolled at ELI. In addition, ELI's student population for Spring 2006 semester included students from Kazakhstan here on the Bolashak program, students from Andong National University here on a short-term program as well as students from Japan, Denmark, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.

Visit by Mr. Karma Tensum, Executive Director of the Tibetan Children's Education Foundation, and three Tibetan Thangka painters. A lecture was given at noon and a presentation was made in the UC South Atrium at 4:00 pm.

An event held twice annually in the UC atrium for students to get information about study abroad opportunities offered at UM.

Re-Entry Meeting, September 2005
An event held for all returned study abroad students to share their experiences with other students who have been abroad, get support in difficulties with re-adjusting to life in the U.S., and learn about how they can put their overseas experience to work.

Training of two Georgian Scholars from Tbilisi Institute of Asia & Africa and Kutaisi State University sponsored by a U.S. Department of State Freedom Support Grant.

Professor Guru Kyi, professor of mathematics, gave several presentations on campus including Tibetan Cultural Heritage - Stupas, Tangkas, etc. on May 3 from noon-1:00 in the Mansfield Center Seminar Room.

UM Delegation to Tajikistan, April-May 2005
A UM delegation visited several universities in Tajikistan . The delegation was lead by President George Dennison and included Vice President Daniel Dwyer, Dean Jerry Fetz, Ambassador Mark Johnson, Professor Mehrdad Kia, Heather Almquist and Otto Koester.

Montana-Ireland Conference, April 25-26, 2005
A delegation from University College Cork visited UM and participated in a conference. On Monday, April 25 at 3:00 pm in the Dell Brown Room, Turner Hall there there was a roundtable discussion titled "Into the West, Looking Homeward: Cork and Montana in the Age of Globalization." There was a keynote address called "Blunt Instruments of Conquest: Irish Outlanders in Montana " given by David Emmons at the UC Theater at 7:00 pm . On Tuesday, April 26 there was another 3:00 roundtable discussion in the Dell Brown Room called "The Celtic Tiger Meets the Wild West: Forging Business Partnerships." At 7:00 pm , the keynote address was given by University College Cork President Gerard T. Wrixon at the UC Theater. View Schedule.

Model Arab League Conference, April 7-9, 2005
The 10th Annual Northern Rockies Model Arab League co-sponsored by the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations and the Office of International Programs.

Ambassadorial Roundtables, April 8 and 9, 2005
The University of Montana hosted two roundtable discussions featuring Ambassadors Khamrokhon Zaripov of Tajikistan and Baktybek Abdrisaev of Kyrgyzstan . They were joined by John Fox, Director of Caucasus and Central Asian Affairs in the Bureau of Europe and Eurasian Affairs in the U.S. Department of State. The first roundtable was Friday, April 8 at 7:00 pm in the UC Theater. The second roundtable was on Saturday, April 9 from 10:00 am to noon in the UC North Ballroom.

Dean Jerry Fetz and Professors Mehrdad Kia and Robert Hausmann visited University College Cork in Republic of Ireland to explore and negotiate the possibility of an exchange relationship. The group also visited the University of Potsdam in Germany for the signing of the exchange agreement.

Marja Unkuri-Chaudhry accompanied President Dennison, Chris Anderson and Michel Valentin on a visit to four universities in France to negotiate new partnerships for UM. Marja also visited the University of Granada in Spain.

A two-day conference co-hosted by Tbilisi Institute of Asia and Africa and The University of Montana. The conference included the opening ceremony of the Montana Room - A Center for American Studies attended by Richard Miles, the United States Ambassador to Republic of Georgia.

Delegation to Kazakhstan, May 2004
Professor Mehrdad Kia accompanied Senator Conrad Burns, Representative Dennis Rehberg and others on a trip to Kazakhstan. The trip included meetings with Kazakhstan's Ministry of Education and the rectors of Kazakh National Pedagogical University and Eurasian National University.

Marja Unkuri-Chaudhry was elected to represent The University of Montana in the Council of Advisors of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP). The ISEP Council of Advisors is made up of 15-20 representatives from 130 member universities around the world.
